Try your hand at identifying a turntable from a really bad photo, episode 2

If you tuned into episode 1...

... you will have learned that the turntable ended up being, as identified by one of the readers, a BSR McDonald "Professional Series". It sure wasn't what I hoped, but I cleaned it up and made it go. After putting a new cartridge on it, I sold it on Facebook Marketplace to someone who wanted to replace a BSR in a console. It was an upgrade for him and I even made a couple of bucks.

Once again, I have bought a turntable and a bunch of records, sight unseen, from a local online auction based on a couple of poor photos. The photos, with the unrelated crap they threw into the lot trimmed out, are attached. This time, I am 99% sure that it is a Dual turntable, and only slightly less sure that it is one with a 12" platter. I'm also pretty sure it has been built into a drawer and the original plinth is long gone.

Any dissenters on this ID? Any educated guesses as to which model?

Pickup will be this Friday afternoon.

Definitely a Dual, with a 12" platter. Looks like a 1219 with the chrome ring missing from the mat.

Yes, a Dual for sure. I'm wondering if it might be some sort of built in amp model like the Dual/Noresco NC1010 I recently found. It looks like it has some silver knobs on the right side or face of it.

That makes a lot of sense given the rat’s nest of wires. Also it appears that the front of the drawer folds forward, which would make more sense if there were controls on the front.

I’ve also seen Sony units with Dual turntables on top.

Appears to have the strobe so it is a 1229(Q).
Upon further review of the photos, and comparisons with photos of 1229s, I have come to agree with this. The mat matches, the placement of the transport screws matches, and I think what you identified as the strobe is in actuality the strobe (at first I thought it was a transport screw).

I'm starting to think the two silvery looking things at the front of the turntable are the screws holding the drawer handle on (if that is what you were looking at).

Well whatever it turns out to be, it is well worth $9. Plus I'm sure the records are all rare first pressing masterpieces.

Here’s the big reveal...

It is indeed a Dual 1229. The outside is dirty, but appears complete. The underside is shockingly clean - suspiciously clean. I’m seeing very little of the peanut butter grease I’ve grown to know and hate on Duals.

Hanging on the sled is an Astatic 153D with one of those double duty styluses. I’m assuming it is not worth messing with - if I’m wrong I hope someone will let me know.

There’s no plinth per se. It is sitting in what I think is a homemade drawer, but in an insert that looks factory made to me. The insert will make it a lot easier to make a plinth.

The rats nest of cables are actually just two ridiculously long leads terminated with mono 1/4” phono plugs. I guess that is why they are called phono plugs. The cables appear to be factory original.

The records are all junk.

Anyway, episode 2 has worked out much better than episode 1. I’m already looking forward to episode 3.

There is a template for the cutout to make a support plate for the turntable. That cabinet could have been made using that template. The cables, well the Dual has RCA jacks so buying the cable needed (dual RCAs about 3' long came with the table, I believe) is what someone would do if they needed something different. If they have an RCA at one end and a ¼" PHONE plug at the other end, those can be used with Crown power amps and some other gear that has the Phone plug inputs. The phone plug does get its name from use in the telephone industry.

Should be a worthy table to bring back to clean and build a nice base.

The cables are indeed 1/4" male plug on one end and RCA on the other. The reason I think the cables are original is that they are tagged "5459 L. PHONO" and "5459 R. PHONO". Maybe they weren't installed by the Dual factory, but by a commercial operation that made the cabinet.

When I went to pick up the turntable, I learned that this was the second auction they had at this site, and they will have several more before the place is cleaned out. Perhaps whatever this thing used to be plugged into will turn up.

My Grandfather has his stereo built into a wall in the den. TT mounted in a drawer and Fisher amp face flush to the wall above. TT was a Elac 50H I think.
