TT Help, Advice

I can get one of two TTs for sale locally. Any opinions or info on either of these would be appreciated. One is a Technics SL B3 and the other is a Yamaha P 300. I kinda like the looks of the tonearm on the Yamaha but I need a decent TT. TIA

Why can you only get one of these two? Why limit yourself to only these? There's lots and lots of TTs out there for sale. I would re-think the issue of restraining your choices to only those two. Not saying the TTs you mentioned are not "decent" but there's much better to be had. (decent is a relative term, decent compared to what?)

I'd suggest taking a step back and open your mind and look into what you can get for X amount of dollars and then make a more informed choice based on what you can afford, rather than choose fromone of these two turntables and asking which one is best. What's your budget?

I have the Yamaha 150 , looks the same as that one .I bought it for the cart that was on it . Saying that , I would go for the Technics . Those Yamaha from that era were all plastic and nothing special. I paid $30 with a Grado cart for the one I bought , it's sitting in a closet . Just from the looks the Technics must be better ?

You could go over to the vinylengine site and look for downloadable manuals for both turntables and start reading. Both tables appear to be belt drive and look in very nice physical condition, have you tested them? Providing they both work, FWIW I might pick the Technics for its medium mass arm that should match up to a wider range of cartridges than the Yamaha which appears to a lighter arm.

Well that's my point, why limit yourself to just these two? OP said he needs a decent TT. Not sure what his budget is but if it were me I'd be looking beyond that short list because better tables are certainly available.

Sorry guys didn't mean to be vague. I just need a table to listen to for a few months until I can get a nice new one. Supposedly they both work. Oh I'll be looking at a Rega hopefully soon.

The Technics was one of their budget priced models but features a decent arm. As a backup table or temporary, go for that. $25-$35- not a penny more, unless the cart is special.

Ok I'm giving up the idea and just ordering a Rega P2. I hate charging crap but I can pay it off in 30 days. Wish it was gonna be a Scout 2, but maybe next year. Thanks for the help, sorry to bother.

Gee I would go for the Technics if it was a good price , I wonder how much better the stock P2 would be ? If you pick up that technics you could throw some cash at a nice cart and still be well under the price of the Rega and get by until you pull the trigger on one of the big boys , then keep the cart . Just a thought .

Keith, spending the extra cash on the P2 hurts now but in the long run you'll get a lot more enjoyment out of it than you would the other two tables you were looking at.
