TT Noob Seeking help for first decent set up

Hello! New to the forum and to the world of Vinyl. I've decided to get back in the game after owning and disowning a crappy USB turntable combo. On Kijiji, there's a couple decent priced TT's in my area. I'm not 100% which to go for.


1. Technics SL-19. Auto return with Shure Hi track needle for $100
Comes with Technics SA-5160 receiver (needs servicing)
and Technics SB-L51 speakers
I have nice speakers but not a receiver with Phono so this might be a good score.


2. Shure 1225 Turntable with Shure M44E Cartridge for $50

3. HITACHI HT-324 New belt & Audio Technica stylus for $180

4. Pioneer PL-S70 Direct Drive Quartz Lock Fully auto w/repeat for $180


I'm also wondering if a Phono Pre-amp is necessary. I think it is considering my Pioneer VSX-D412 receiver doesn't seen to have phono. I've heard good things about the DJPre-2 Interface. For $40, can't go wrong. Any responses greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No personal experience with the tables mentioned but good to see a,young guy get into vinyl, and welcome to the site.

The technics is a belt drive, and technics belt drives despite being decent, are usually their most basic offerings.

Do you mean Dual 1225? It's nice, but it's an automatic idler. If it needs maintenance, it'll be more complex than most.

Hitachi, I'm not sure, I do own a direct drive Hitachi HT-350, which is actually a really nice TT. My guess is this one will be the easiest to service.

Pioneer, the auto/repeat mechanism may be complicated to service if it needs it. But being DD quartz, this one will most likely have the best speed stability.

I had an ARTDJ, I actually like an old realistic one better, Realistic 42-2101a, I bought a few of them at around $20 each

I own a Pioneer PL-S70 and couldn't be happier with it. I'm not sure about the exhange rate, but $180 CDN seems high to me unless the TT is in extremely great condition. They can be had on Ebay regularly for a fairer price.

An RIAA preamp is a must IMHO. You may be able to plug a TT into your amp and get music out of your speakers, but a phono preamp does more than just boost the signal.

I'm not an auidio engineer but my understanding is that when a record is cut it has a specific tone bias factored in.

An RIAA preamp compensates for that bias.

Someone else I am sure can explain that much better.

As far as your TT dilemma goes, as you sink further into the disease of audiophillia , your need for gear will lead you to buying other TTs.
What ever you buy this time will just be part of your collection next time

The price may be a little high for the US members, $180 CDN = $140.00 USD.

Usually items on Kijiji are available for local pickup and can be inspected for functional capability and no risk of damage due to shipping.

Go for it if it is still available.
