TT Selection For AT33PTG/II

Hello again dear forum members.

I decided to replace my Marantz 6300 after upgrading from at-vm95ml to at33ptg/ii which will be arriving within 1 week.

I also ordered Technics TYL-0331 Headshell which is a light one that i ordered for my heavy mass tonearm on Marantz for the resonance limits. İ don’t know if i will be needing it with my new TT.

My options below in the poll. İt is allowed maximum 10 options. İ will add the rest below) I appreciate if you can help me choose one since i can’t find useful information in Turkey.

This TT is modern version. İ’m looking for only vintage as my amplifier and speaker. İ like that years.

I would buy a nice vintage table and a great tonearm to use on it. Since you might go manual turntable this is my choice. The PS is an auto table and if you want that, the Sony is adequate for the task.

I have a few different tonearms and the Magnepan works well with most of my cartridges no matter what the resonance frequency charts say. Partly because it is a unipivot and partly because it is a damn fine tonearm designed to be very versatile. The separate tonearm depending on model can be better than most any arm on those tables you have listed.

I am told the at33ptg/I seems like it was made for the Thorens TP-90 timers I have on my TD-320 table - the cartridge is en route to me and I will share the outcome. Related to the OP original list, I have the PL-630 and have found that it takes pretty much any cartridge in the medium compliance range with great outcome. It is really an exceptional turntable. I no longer have a place for it in my system (but for how long, no one knows ) but just can’t get rid of it.

@Blue Shadow Sir, i am so butterfingered. That’s why i don’t want a manuel tonearm. As i order an expensive cart, it had better to be full automatic TT why do you suggest manuel arm?

Here is my chatgpt results.

Normally i pay attention to look also. As i love my marant 6300. İt has a modified glossy look sweet cherry wooden. But after upgrading to sound became more important. İ wish there was a good wooden look TT way better than marantz 6300.

İ’m so high to Sony PS-8750. Even there is no wooden case, it looks cool. And direct drive calls me. Yes thorens td-124 seems excellent, belt drive scares me for maintanence purposes.

After the results here i will decide.

For now there is a few votes and Sony is taking the lead.

I would think you would want to put a the SL-1300 or SL-1200 GR2 on your list. I am waiting for the 1300 to be released so I can audition them and compare them to the $4000 SL 1200 version.

What kind of floor do you have? If your room has a wooden floor (not solid concrete/stone) then stay away from the Thorens tables or any "sprung" table as foot steps can cause the sprung plinth to bounce and the records to skip, unless you put it on a study wall mount. I would steer clear of the Denon, most of them need to be recapped and that is not any easy thing to do on those. Your CEC made Marantz 6300 is as good as any of the Pioneer you listed, if you MUST change out, the Yamaha would be my selection.

If you want a wooden look, here is my new Technics SL-1200GR2 with a wood surround (bought from a guy in Spain)... the good looks of a vintage table with the reliably of brand new:

İ will probably go with Sony. Because i found a 2 different setup in Turkey which is Sony TA-F7B and another one Sony pre-power setup TA-E7B pre and TA-N7B. They require a budget even if i sell my TA-F6B.

F7 has vfet technology which i am now searching google of what does i lt mean. Dunno if it is worth to upgrade it. But for the pre-power i think it will be a great upgrade. İ will talk to the sellers.

So does your TA-F6B, but it's uniqueness lies in the the use of an SMPS power supply (like most class D amps nowadays).. that's why it only weighs 12 kg.

My concern is that that amp and pre-amp you are considering are all 40+ years old and if they need to be repaired some parts may be unobtainable.
But they are top of the line quality & design wise.

Belt drive tables are fine, just change the belt every 4-5 years. The Yamaha I like is the old and very expensive GT-2000 series... they are huge and weigh a ton (built like a tank).

I have the Audio Technica AT 33Sa on my Technics 1200 MkII. They are a nice combo.

You're right.. the F7 is a 70 wpc version of your F6 it has 2 MM inputs but no MC headamp.
In other words your F6 (100 wpc) is better and has more features than the F7 (70 wpc)

However the F7 has a traditional toroidal power supply as opposed to the SMPS in your F6

I put an at33PTG/II on my Thorens TD-320 mk2 - I was told it would be a good combination with the TP-90 arm. And it is. It’s been running a few months now and it is pure synergy - made for each other it seems. Can’t recommend it enough in this table/arm combination. I have my system dialed in pretty well right now but the at33ptg brought it to new heights. Was listening to REM Fables of the Reconstruction this afternoon and it was like Michael Stipe was in the room with me - shockingly awesome. Then played a Coltrane album and … goosebumps. This cartridge is absolutely amazing - worth every declining value Canadian penny I paid for it
