tube for solid state trade?

hi everybody...

I have a chance to trade my Harmon Kardon PM635 solid state amp
for a Harmon Kardon Tube amp W/pre-amp. I do not have the model # of the tube amp, but I think it is about 80W per. I have never owned a tube stereo amp so I am not familiar with the downside. other than it mite be a bit noisier and periodic tube replacement. I am a guitar player so I understand tube warmth etc. I am thinking I would be less than smart to not do the trade.

being a tube junkie, I'd do it in a HEARTBEAT . . 'course, it would still depend on what models the tube amp and preamp are. . . .

The guy who has it bought it a few years ago and has pretty much not used it. I talked to the guy who sold it to him, he said it was in good shape when he sold it t this guy. I will try to get the model #.
Is there a reason to not do it if it is in good shape (i.e. works) as far as hum etc.?
 
I think the big downside to tubes is maintenance (unless you enjoy that sort of thing). That being said, I think they are worth every frustrating minute. :thmbsp:
 
hum could be a couple out of spec caps or resistors plan9, not a huge deal. My amps hummed when I bought them. Didn't hum with the sellers low sensitivity speakers, but did with my Tannoys. BTW, they sound great now!
 
I am so bummed...I finally got ahold of the guy with the tube amp, it is a Citation II, but he has changed his mind. I offered him the moon but he would not budge. somebody hold me, and stroke my head....life is hard

Wow! that is one sweet amp. That would have been nice for you but he would be an idiot to get rid of it.

What you need is a proper SS amp. I traded a Carver PM900 for a pair of consecuitively SN-ed McIntosh 75's. Funny thing was, he got waaaay more use out of his amp that I did mine. We both walked away from that deal muttering, "Sucker!!!!".

A running, original Cit. II is about $1k value depending on its appearance. Properly rebuilt and in good condition, it only goes up from there.
