Tube function in Audio Experiences Symphonies

Hi,

I have an audio experiences symphonies pre-amplifier, it uses one 6x4 rectifier tube and 3 12ax7/ecc83 tubes.

I wonder wich tubes have more to say in the overall sound, is it the 3 12ax7 or the rectifier tube? anyone familiar with this pre-amp?

The 3 12ax7 I got are 2 NOS telefunken smooth plate, one new production mullard and one NOS philco 12ax7. i am now using 2 telefunken in each side and the mullard in the middle, i havent tried the NOS philco yet. I dont really understand whats the function of each tube in the different position and wich position has more to say in the overall sound...?

In the rectifier position i have an NOS tung sol, one matshushita, one jan philips and one NOS philips miniwatt. Anyone familiar with this tubes and their different sound characteristics? I believe the miniwatt sounds best.

I am aware that experimentation will reveal the best combination of tubes but i wonder if there is someone out there familiar with this pre-amp and what do they think

thank you in advance!:smoke:

The 12AX7s have the big impact to create the tube sound. Though some will debate it, tube rectifiers won't contribute to the tube sound. If tube rectifiers did have a big impact, you could build a SS amp with a tube rectifier and have it sound like tubes?

I own one , 6X4 rolling wont change the sound any , the unit has a regulated power supply after it . The active circuitry is a near clone of a Marantz 7 line stage , the two outer 12AX7's are the two gain stages, and the center tube is two cathode followers ,one for each channel .

I changed all the electrolytic caps in the power supply , the originals had a very high failure rate . I also added some bypass caps to it .

I settled for two GE 12AX7's selected for low noise and microphonics , for the gain stages and a GE 5751 for the cathode follower .

this is a basic schematic of the line stage

So, the outer 12ax7 should be the same right? i have the two telefunken in those positions and one mullard in the middle. have an extra philco but never used it

Correct , the two outers one make more of a difference and should be the same .
