Tube preamp decision time.......what to do?

Super Member
I have two tube preamps and I only need one, so I have to decide which one to let go. I have a stock Harman-Kardon Citation I that works fine when tested, but needs rebuilt before I would put into everyday use, then I also have a newer Wright WLA-12A. I want to keep them both, but since I haven't been working for months I have to let one go to pay the bills.

The Citation I has a great reputation as one of the best preamps ever, but it needs a little work and cash to bring into reliable operating condition. The Wright pre is newer, has 6 inputs, two outputs and is simpler in design.

Which of the two would you guys let go or hold on to & why? Thanks for helping me make up my mind.........

Does the Wright have a phono stage? I don't think so. Desire to run phono and whether or not I have stand alone phono stage would likely play into my decision. Beyond that I have heard neither and really don't know.

Just from situation I'd probably keep the wright an move the citation, it'll be easy to move.

We need to be careful of value/price/sale in this forum, otherwise the thread needs
to be moved to Dollars and Cents, Myself and Douglas have already covered that, :)

The Wright is more an newer possibly technically better preamp and less in the signal
path unit, as well as the need for rebuilding the Citation plus any future upkeep there.

Yes, the Wright has no phono stage. I don't use my turntable anymore and if I wanted to, I have some integrateds I could hook up to.
I am leaning toward selling the Citation, mainly because it needs to have the caps upgraded and I do not need any more projects right now.

If the H.K were in perfect reliable condition, I'd say keep it and sell the other.
But, having been unemployed in the not too distant past and still being under employed, you need to keep only reliable stuff. You don't have the money to be farting around with repair bills on top of the bills you get just for living. Sell the H.K. and keep the Wright. If you have several systems, you may want to do a similar check of what would be best to keep and then sell off the rest.

Looking at the other posts it looks like the decision is how much you want to get. The Wright will not bring what the Citation will.

Since the phono stage doesn't have to be your primary source I vote to cash in on the Citation.

I don't say this lightly. I think the Citation is a beautiful and sweet sounding preamp.
