Tube rolling in the Audible Illusions Modulus 3

Recycle belly button lint!
Well I've finally got some tubes to roll in the AI M3.

First I had to learn how to hook the thing up properly though, lol. I have no manual for mine but came across this site which has a PDF of the manual for the M3A:

http://www.geocities.com/judgmentday1/aim3a.pdf

I'd read about the phasing issue but didn't find out that you have to switch polarity on both speakers until today. I'd switched it on one and was kinda wondering why the bass on the speaker I hadn't switched wasn't as good as the other speaker. Now I know! The bass is much better now.

As well I wasn't aware that the CD and DAT inputs have a dropping resistor. As well the second set of outputs have a resistor. Guess where I had my CD player plugged in, as well as which set of outputs I was using? Well I'm using the Aux input and the first set of outputs now and the difference is amazing.

The amp came with a quad of Sovtek 6922s and a quad of Tungsram E88CCs.

One of the Tungsrams must have been boarder line because after a few days of running the AI one of them got very noisy. The sound was quite good before that, even though I didn't have the AI set up optimally.

So I put in the Sovteks. A much brighter sounding tube tonally. Not as nice as the Tungsrams by a long shot.

A new quad of Tungsram E88CCs arrived so I've put them in and the sound is much fuller. This even improved after I got everything hooked up right, :D.

I have some Tesla 7DJ8s coming and am hoping to source some Siemens 7308s soon.

Will let you know what they sound like as they arrive.

Cheers

Your experience reminds me of myself last year when I was purchasing various 6V6s on ebay to hear which one meets my requirements.

If you are very demading, expect to invest a lot to find the answer.

Best Regards,

Best Regards,

It would have been nice if I had a stock of the tubes I'd like to try but I had zippo, well one Amperex 6DJ8 but I'm not about to waste that one in the AI.

I may try the mods that wheezer from over on AA has done on his AI:

"If you're a handy DIY'r, you might consider changing the cathode resistors to 270ohms (Rat Shack is fine). Change the cathode bypass caps to 220uf (cerafines are wonderful).
Then go to ebay and buy whatever tubes in the 6dj8/6922/7308 family you desire...no more tube eater. Your plate voltage will now be 90Vdc +-, which is what Amperex recommends for 10,000hrs of use."

Would be nice to be able to use a wider selection of tubes in it. Not sure how much the mod would effect the sound of the pre though.

Here's a pic of wheezers modded M3.

Cheers
