My guess is solid state. That unit looks to have the same dimensions as the Magnavox units that had a black Japanese design. And if I remember correctly, they were late '60s with the infamous "no user serviceable parts" stickers on the back.

The seller just sent me a pic of the manual. It says Astro-Sonic on it, so it's definitely a solid state unit. Oh well...
