Well, it finally happened. A C-220 tube preamp has snuck into my office and placed itself in the signal path. Results?
It's a simple system of an MS-300, C-220, MC-352 and JM Lab Utopia Be L&Rs. IC Cables are Cardas GR, speaker cables are Ultralink CL-212 In-Wall.
The C-220 replaced a Threshold T-2 (which is a darn fine unit from 1990). While I liked the sound, it was missing something. Even though the amp and speakers are different, the missing element seemed to be something that the MDA-1000 provides for the MS-300 at home.
Well... the C-220 isn't a complete fix, but it's 90%. The combination of tubes' "rounder" sound with the MS-300 seems to work exceptionally well together. This makes no sense, but there seems to be more detail and a better soundstage and sense of presence than with the Threshold. Considering that the 220 is the BOTL and quite inexpensive, I'm very impressed.
As far as I'm concerned, the office system is finished.
