"Tubey" Warm Sounding Integrated Amp Recommendations?

Budget up to $1500 for a fully restored unit, what do you recommend for a really tubey and soft and warm sounding 1970s (or even 1960s or 1980s) integrated amp? It also needs to be refinded sounding, of course. My only source would be a DAC (computer based). Power is irrelevant. I have pretty efficient and easy to drive speakers. 10W is probably enough. Not interested in receivers, just integrated amps. I'm wide open on brand and model, honestly. I'm pretty new to vintage audio. I'm stuck in paralysis by analysis mode right now ...

I would be looking for something with lateral mosfets.

I don't have a specific model in mind for you, as I have never looked too much into integrated amplifiers.

If the door were open for power amplifiers, there would be lots more to choose from.

Maybe something capacitor coupled? They can sound tubey. For $1500 you might be able to find the real thing. A nice restored tube integrated amp.
My Marantz SS cap coupled integrated amp is on the warm side.

It seems so, as you've created a handful of threads in the past couple of days asking variations of the same question.

One suggestion I would have is if you're gonna create a thread asking for advice, suggestions etc at least reply back when folks offer up those suggestions and advice's

A lot of cap coupled amps have that sort of sound. I'm a bit partial to early Sherwood stuff, but probably just because I happen to own an S9500a. It has sonics reasonably similar to my S5500II tube integrated too.

Standard old stuff warnings are going to apply to most vintage gear though. My Sherwood is from 1968 and was full of off-value resistors, some noisy transistors, and bad caps. It needed a full overhaul in order to run at it's best and you can expect similar sorts of things from anything pushing the half century mark. Japanese stuff often seemed to run better resistors than early US solid state gear but its not a guarantee they will all be good.

I have my Marantz 1060 cap coupled amplifier playing today. It has a nice smooth warm tone without sounding flabby or rolled off. These do pop-up in bartertown from time to time. Its one of my favorite SS integrated amps. I can listen to it for hours, no ear fatigue. :music:

IME, the only SS amps have some "tubey" sound are Accuphase E-202 with adjustable Damping Factor and VFET Sony TA-8650 and VFET Yamaha B-2 and B-1/UC-1 combo. Any SS that sounds warm is tubby, not tubey.

Vfets do sound a lot like tubes. Those are good choices also.

No one hits a home run on the first shot. It’s a journey. There is no substitute for trying something out, learning about it, and selling it for something different if it’s not your cup o’ tea.

I’ve used close to two dozen amps/receivers/pre-power amps over a 50 year period before I settled on my mid 70’s era Marantz separates........ for now :D

Just a WAG, but this may have had something to do with his disappearance. ;)
