TUNERSYS WS161: When an Internet Radio Finally Grew Its Own Voice

I'm done.

For the last few years, my little basement listening nook has turned into a graveyard of good intentions. A drawer full of Bluetooth dongles that squashed Nina Simone's upper register into fizzy digital confetti. A Sonos Connect that decided to drop off the network every time the microwave fired up. And don't get me started on the multi-room apps that need more updates than my tax software. I didn't want a "smart home ecosystem." I wanted a modern tuner I could reach out and touch — something that would feed a clean, no-nonsense Wi-Fi stream straight into a pair of vintage passive monitors without a rat's nest of outboard gear in between.

Running a small living space art project (whatarter) here in Brooklyn, I'm always an absolute crank about how gear looks on a shelf—it has to look like fine furniture and sound like heaven. I stumbled upon this unit online, and figuring the return policy would protect me if it was junk, I pulled the trigger.

In plain English, I wanted my Marantz 2270 back, but for the age of internet radio. I just never expected anyone to actually build it.

Three weeks ago, a carton arrived from an outfit called TUNERSYS. I unboxed it, wired it up, and powered it on. It now sits on my equipment rack, right where the 2270 used to live, glowing a soft amber. I figure it's time to talk.

What It Actually Is

The WS161 is something I've been scouring spec sheets for since the Obama administration, and I hadn't seen it until now: a complete, high-end Skytune internet radio tuner with a built-in hi-fi amplifier. That description sounds deceptively plain, but anyone who's waded through the current streaming landscape will understand why it's rare. There are plenty of bare Skytune streamer boards, and there are countless little Class-D chip-amps dressed up as lifestyle products. That, my friends, is the killer feature. It's the reason my credit card came out.

Yes, the amp is Class D. A Texas Instruments TPA3611.

I know some of the old bones around here still frown at the letters "Class D." I did too, initially. But the way this TPA3611 conducts itself inside the WS161 has made my prejudices look silly. This isn't one of those cheap, efficiency-at-all-costs implementations that sacrifices any semblance of musicality. Driving my 15-ohm Rogers LS3/5a — a load that has humbled far more expensive amplifiers — the little Rogers woke up. Piano decay hung in the air. Stand-up bass had real wooden body, not just thump. When I switched over to my equally ancient Yamaha NS-10M Studios, the midrange was as ruthlessly honest as ever, and even pushed to uncomfortably loud levels, the amp never sounded like it was running out of breath. The power supply filtering inside clearly does its job well. TUNERSYS chose this amplifier for a very straightforward reason: one box, no fuss. And you have to admit, there's a kind of moral superiority in being able to pour a glass of bourbon at midnight, flip a switch, and let music fill the room with zero additional drama.

But the feature that truly cements this machine's place on my shelf is on the back panel: a pair of fixed-level RCA outputs, plus a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Build Quality: The Kind of Metal You Can Knock On

It's not the machined-aluminum showpiece that the front panel knob is, but it does the job without fuss, and it'll survive being dropped between the couch cushions.

Presets, Alarm, and Sleep: Little Things That Matter

Here's where the WS161 quietly shows it understands how real people listen. You get 99 preset slots for your favorite stations — not the stingy dozen or so that some manufacturers dole out — which means you can actually organize your listening. I've got Classic Hits Radio on preset 1, FIP Paris on 2, RTÉ Lyric on 3, a Scandinavian free-jazz stream on 7, a Tokyo J-AOR community station on 12, and so on. One press and you're there.

But the feature that genuinely surprised me is the music alarm. You can set the WS161 to wake you up on specific days of the week at a specific time, and it'll fire up whichever of your 99 presets you choose. There's something almost decadent about being gently pulled from sleep by a Celtic harp broadcast from County Clare, piped through your own LS3/5a at 7:15 on a Sunday morning. It's the kind of civilized touch that makes the machine feel less like a gadget and more like a household companion.

On the flip side, there's a sleep timer with settings for 15, 30, 45, 60, or 90 minutes. I've been using it almost every night. Set it to 60, let RTÉ Lyric play, and the WS161 quietly powers itself down while I'm already somewhere between waking and dreaming.

A Note on Speaker Connections (Because Someone Will Ask)

Around back, you get four speaker terminals — left positive and negative, right positive and negative — not eight, not a full surround array. Just good old-fashioned stereo. The WS161 actually comes in two versions here, depending on your preference: one with sturdy push-clip terminals that grab bare wire like a bulldog, and one with proper banana-plug binding posts. Mine is the banana-post version, and I'm happy to report they're solid, gold-plated, and accept the kind of spades and bananas you actually have lying around in your cable bin. Power Supply: The Upgrade an Old Crank Can't Resist

Two Lives, One Chassis

The WS161 has lived two completely different lives under my roof.

The first week, I used it to drive the Rogers directly. Speaker cables locked into the binding posts, and the machine became a single, pure system: radio tuner plus integrated amplifier. As I spun that big multifunction knob, I was suddenly transported back to the late Seventies. Except instead of straining to catch distant college stations buried in the FM noise floor, I was watching the little green LCD quietly announce, "FIP Paris, AAC, 256kbps." But to answer you honestly, @audiotemp: You caught me, but there’s a very simple backstory to it. whatarter.com was actually my personal online gallery where 99% of the stuff I listed were just my own digital wall art and decor posters—hence the name "What Art-er".

I'm an artist, but a total vintage audio restoration nut at heart. Over the past year, several of my premium art clients—who happen to be big vintage HiFi collectors themselves—kept bugging me about finding a high-quality internet radio/tuner that actually had that proper retro wood aesthetic to match their home decor, without sounding like garbage.

Since I had been personally testing and throwing hardware feedback at TUNERSYS, I figured, "Why not list a few units on my art site and test the waters for my clients?" It was purely a temporary experiment to see if buyers appreciated uncompressed WiFi audio in a vintage shell. That test is over now, and the gallery site is completely closed down.

It's all too obvious - every post has some sort of off topic morph into the wonders of the WS161 or internet radio boards - from a brand new member.
The text "color" is advertising hard copy style, which AI can do quite well, even for people who don't speak English, or even live where they say they do...
And denial of the obvious is seen all too often these days...but alas, actions always count more words.

OK Sam, let's discuss your favorite tuner alignment techniques, especially for units that have no service manual. What initial measurements would you do, and then what service actions, in what order?

I run a community elsewhere where this sort of behavior is super common. It gets very easy to recognize the more elaborate bots after a while. It helps that usually these accounts are run by unscrupulous and uneducated people whose grasp on English is tenuous so they think the crapola these LLMs excrete qualifies as great writing when really it sounds like a glib psychopath salesman.
