Tuntable system upgrade advise

Hello All.

I'm new to this forum but I have been reading some interesting posts and decided to ask for advices.

I would like to upgrade my turntable system, below my current system:

Turntable: SANSUI SR-222
Cartridge: ORTOFON 2M RED
Receiver: MITSUBISHI DA-R17
Speaker: X2 KLIPSCH 2.1 (+2 medium-low quality, lightweight speakers with no brand) so I run 4 speakers out of the receiver.

What I would like to add/replace is the following:
Cartridge: pass to MC with Denon DL-103R
Add a low output voltage PREAMP (maybe Emotiva Audio XPS-1)
SPEAKERS: Replace the 2 medium-low quality speakers with KLIPSCH 3.1

Do you have any advice-point of view on my current set up that I may not see or the general idea?
Also I would like to have opinions on my potential changes I'd like to add/change.

You could upgrade a piece every second week for a year if you wanted. Changing several things at a time is not as good as changing one thing and then listening to see how it changed the sound. If you change 2 things at a time you won't know what really made the biggest difference and may even prove to be a setback. Take your time and do it slowly. I believe most would agree with doing it this way.
 
I agree with the previous posts--upgrade the speakers, or at minimum, disconnect the cheapo/no-name speakers to get them out of the system--just use your two higher resolving Klipsch.

I am a huge fan of the theory of changing one thing at a time and then waiting at least a month to live with the change to determine what effect it had--better, worse, or none at all. Remember--"different" is just that--"different"--not necessarily better or worse--that is all in your perception/opinion in your environment.

The Emotiva phono pre seems to be pretty well-liked around these parts, especially for its price-point. I have never owned one, but have listened to them on different systems and was not disappointed. YMMV

I am not intimately familiar with the Denon cart/Sansui table combo, but you may want to ask over at the Turntable forum or over at the Vinyl Engine website regarding compatibility of that cart with the arm on your table. Some do not play well with others due to issues of compliance and arm mass.

Echo the need for much better speakers. The rest of your system is decent. Get speakers with a 12" woofer and a separate midrange and tweeter. That will provide you with the full range of sound.
 
Ditto on the speakers,and I recommend the xps-1,very good pre at the price point although I see they have gone up a bit.

I was looking into other klipsch.
Any thoughts of klipsch 4.2 or heresy HWO?

As to speakers, do you have any particular reason why you are only looking at klipsch as there are many other brands available? Also, what kind of music do you listen to? What is most important as to the sound quality? Booming bass, extended highs, clear midrange, wide soundstage, very dynamic, etc?

I'm looking into klipsch because I like how my little 2.1 sounds like. But completely open to other brands.
I mainly listen to classic rock and jazz.

If you want to stick with Klipsch, I'd avoid the Heresy's--but that is just me--I find them to be lacking in bottom end and "honky" when power is applied. I tend to prefer the "three sisters"--Quartet, Chorus and Forte series.. The KG series are also (IMO) a better option over Heresy's--but they do have a huge following, and remain in production as part of the Heritage series.

Selecting speakers is a very personal decision--everyone likes what they like and not everyone likes the same characteristics. Then there is the factor of how they interact with your amplifier and room--what sounds good to you in any given system/room combination may not sound the same in your system/room, so take your time and audition everything you can. ALWAYS bring your own music to an audition--it doesn't have to be a "perfect" or "reference standard" recording--just something YOU are very familiar with.

For classic rock, I am partial to my JBL's--for better recorded material or material with more detail, I prefer my Infinity's and Magneplanar's--but again, that is just me. YMMV

Again--as for the cart/TT combination, ask around--someone with actual experience with that set-up may chime in with a bit of advice.
