Turntable Dustcover Replacement

I have a Micro Seiki DD-40 turntable with the M-505 tone arm. I have had it about 28 years, and it still is a fine performer. A major problem that Micro Seiki had with the DD-40 was a poorly engineered dustcover. I have seen 10 different DD-40 turntables through the years, and everyone has had the same dustcover problem as mine. Where the two hinges attach to the plexiglass there was not enough thickness to handle the stress of the hinge spring pressure, so gradually cracks appeared in the plexiglass next to the hinges. The cracks continue to grow until the plastic finally breaks at the point where the hinges are attached.

I have removed both hinges from my dustcover, glued a custom fitted piece of maple veneer over the back inside surface to hide the cracks from view, and have to lift the dustcover off and on when I use or park the turntable. I have been doing this for over 20 years now, and want to fix it somehow.

Are there any manufacturers making replacement or custom made turntable dust covers? Maybe there is a NOS (new old stck) cover somewhere that might be available, maybe laying around in a distributor's warehouse. I need some help.

Hello Jdandy,
Yes, I have seen a company, or two that does do custom Dust Covers, generally from 1/4" Acrylic, and can be made to either fit on top of Turntable base, probably like your original does, and may even be able to make you an identical "clone", or can make a whole Turntable cover, which will encase the whole turntable.

In a whole Turntable cover scenario, notches can be fabricated into the rear-sides to allow for cords-cables exiting.

I've see these in clear, as well as blue tinted material, and pehaps as well, smoke colored.

The pieces are cut, then assembled with glue, and are generally of museum grade quality, so they won't detract from looks. Lots of owners of certain VPI Tables opt for the larger whole table covers, and Ginko as well sells-makes them for tables such as the VPI.

With making a copy-clone of what you now have, probably not much material would be needed, and thus keep costs lower.

Not sure about the availability of NOS, but I'm sure there's been others out there with your exact same problem, and you might be able to gain more information, by posing these questions in a forum such as Audiogon Audio Forum. Mark

Hey, I appreciate the replys. I'll check out Ginco and turntabledepot.com. You would think there would be a fairly large market for replacement turntable dustcovers, especially with the increasing interest in retro turntables and the continued interest in vinyl.
