Turntable Evaluation

My son and I are just picked up a Rotel RP 4400 turntable. We're told
the cart. has 60% life still on it. What would be a decent investment
in a new cart for this table? Where does this table lay in the "world
of TT's?" We've googled all over the place trying to find out some
info on the table. Any good....worth putting some money into it?

Thanks!

Looks like a great starter table, but I don't think I'd be spending big bucks on a new cart. for it. An Audio Technica AT120e would probably be fine for the grand sum of $80.

What cart. is on it now?

Jeff

It's a typical '80s Japanese model, probably made by CEC for Rotel. The wood base indicates that it's at least a mid-line model, belt drive with FG servo means good speed accuracy with adjustable pitch. I agree with vinylkid that the AT-120E is a good choice, but you could even spend a little more if you wanted. The AT-440MLa would be a nice match. Stanton 681EEE would be another. And depending on the cart that's on there, it might be worthwhile upgrading the stylus.

What protocol made the seller determine the cartridge stylus has 60% life? I know about the protocol to check the stylus with assistant maginification. But what made the seller come to this conclusion?

I once had a girl tell me she was 60% Amish. (she was from Lancaster PA)

Oh and she was a ummm "Exotic Dancer". really good looking girl.

So, anyway... what kind of cart is on it now?

If its halfway decent might be worth a stylus...?

I understand that cartridges typically last a long time... so the 60% life comment must have been directed to the stylus.
