Turntable from Japan shipping experiences

This turntable can be running slow only if the frequency of its quartz oscillator is too low. But in that case, the strobe would still be showing that the speed is locked since the strobe uses the same master frequency as the rest of the circuitry.

You can't run Denon turntables without the platter since the feedback signal for the speed control is recorded on the platter itself.

Interesting—I guess this means the strobe serves no purpose since the speed in not adjustable (unlike the DP80.) What are the causes/fixes for the quartz oscillator?
 
I’m not arguing for you to keep the table, or that the speed is correct, just that you need to verify with something more than a phone app.

You can purchase a standalone strobe light/tester on Amazon for well under $50, and this is probably the best option and a useful tool for future use.

Another option: The 2000 plinth has arm boards right? Just cut some scrap wood wide enough to sit into the recess, doesn’t even have to fit length wise, drill it for the tonearm and try it….all it has to do is be playable for one record pass.

Assuming you’ll be asking for a refund, the seller may require something more than a phone app, but maybe not:dunno:

The phone app is accurate enough. My main table is a Technics SP10MKII (which sounds right to me,) and it shows 33.4, and my JVC shows 33.33.

Who knows? If it's the crystal itself, then it's an easy and cheap fix. You can buy a pack of five 9 MHz crystals on eBay for a couple of bucks.

@stratokaster most likely has much more experience than I at diagnosing/fixing these type of tables…

Owned several DP75s over the years, including my current one, never seen one that’s just slow, they usually exhibit slow/fast or something weird, however I’ve never personally had one that was off, but have talked to others experiencing issues.

This last one I purchased from Japan was completely serviced before it was shipped, but that’s what the dealer did to insure his business…

It's impossible to diagnose these 'tables over the internet. You have to take a scope and look at waveforms at various test points to understand what's going on. But just looking at the service manual, not many things would cause it to run consistently slow.

I appreciate your insight. If I understand you correctly, it seems that any reasonably competent tech should be able to diagnose the problem—or do I need to send it to a specialist?
 
On a tangent: how are you accessing Japanese Yahoo auctions please? I've tried in the past and google translate is no help. Do you understand Japanese? Or is there another way to make the site usable?

Wouldn't mind a bargain Denon DD to see what the fuss is about. I'm itching to sell/give away a 90s Thorens to make way for it.
 
Sites like Yahoo Buyee.jp have their own English translation, one just has to pay close attention to the shipping arrangements/cost. Buyee is mainly a bidding site, but know several people that have purchased good deals from the site….

Another option is that some of the EBay sellers from Japan have their own websites, I’ve purchased a tonearm from one and received 15% off of the item. Found out about the website by asking a question, now I always ask if they have a store site, that is if I’m interested in an offering.

Already eyeing up Nagaoka styli that you cannot get here, for not much money.
