Turntable Glossary

I know this is such a "NOOB" post/thread, but was just thinking that it sure would help this noob if there were a turntable "glossary" type thread here. (preferably a Sticky) I mean, most of us know basics like stylus, cartridge, counterweight, belt drive vs. direct drive etc...

But reading a lot of threads, there's a lot of terminology I don't know exactly what it means.

So I'll start w/a couple.

Plinth?

Phono Stage?

I know there's more that I've scratched my head on, but these 2 come to mind right away. Maybe other noobs will add and we can get some explanation/definition from the more experienced AKers.

(btw, thread not meant to be a debate over what's better, what's best.... just an explanation of common terms)

That is a great start, but plinth and phono stage are not there. Plinth is the turntable base. Phono stage is the circuitry in a preamp, amp, or receiver responsible for performing the amplification and special equalization necessary for the turntable signal. So a component with a phono stage will have an input marked PHONO. Unless otherwise marked, it would be for a moving magnet cartridge. Moving coil cartridges require extra circuitry to step up the signal voltage and so you would see a separate input marked MC or a switch or control marked MC.
