turntable hum

hello everyone, I could use some help. I've got a buddy with a technics turntable and a 20 year old pioneer receiver with an annoying hum to it. I've tried grounding it the correct way to the screw and also grounding it to a negative speaker terminal. Neither worked. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to remedy this problem?

What kind of cartridge does your buddy have on his Technics turn table? :scratch2:

Also try reversing the turntable's AC plug, if possible.

I'd also give a try to cleaning the headshell pins, assuming its got a detatchable headshell. Clean the RCA plugs too. Crusty connections can make things hum the same as ground problems can.

G'day all, yes I concur with gagdet73. Hum is generally an in indication of a missing earth somewhere, so clean every connection, preferably with Deoxit and see if that helps! Regards, Felix aka catman.

Don't know if this would create a hum but, what Pioneer receiver? May have a switch in the back for different cartridge output levels settings. That would be feedback though, wouldn't it

Wow, thank you everyone for your suggestions. I'll definitely try them tomorrow. And Balifly, his cartridge is an audio technica, but I'm not sure which one.

The wall plug itself may not be properly grounded. Depending on the age of the house, many older ones simply did not properly ground every plug.

Try reversing the receiver to wall plug also if not a polarized type. It's also possible to run a ground wire from the receiver turntable ground connection directly to earth.
