That second pic looks like a Collaro, probably in a early 70s Magnavox console. Its got that 70s ugly fake plastic wood look to it. Dig that purple grille cloth. You can do worse in a record changer, but that one likely has a ceramic cartridge and probably needs an overhaul. I don't mind record changers, but I never recommend one to someone unless they are willing and able to tear it apart and rebuild the thing so it works properly. If you're into consoles, you can do much better as far as cosmetics and sound go. Get something no newer than the late 60s thats actually made of wood instead of MDF with vinyl contact paper veneer. Most of those consoles from the 70s were quite simply garbage as far as build goes.
The JVC isn't special but its not terrible either. Mostly it depends on the price. I'd pay 25 bucks for something like that if it was proved working but probably not much more.
the bright tinny sound is kind of what you get from a cheap AT, especially if its worn. I've run cheap ATs on similarly built Technics decks and when they are new, they actually sound pretty good. They do have a lot of sparkle up top though, so they don't do you any favors on beat up records.
