Well my VPI turntable unfortunately never ran at the correct speed. After a new belt, it ran too slow at 33 but fine at 45. Even the original owner stated it had the same problem, which VPI called acceptable and within tolerance. Being sensitive with pitch, I took it to my VPI dealer where it measured between 32.8 and 33.0 RPM! Their solution was applying some thin coat of black epoxy and then filing it down until it ran dead-on. Honestly you can’t tell it is there and they did a great job.
However, when playing some LPs, there is no provision for pitch adjustment. Also it is a pain to switch from 33 to 45. I’ve looked into outboard turntable power supplies such as the VPI ADS but it costs $1500 and I don’t want to spend that much. The much cheaper Pro Ject Speed Box, Music Hall Cruise Control, Falcon / Eagle PSU, and Heed Orbit seem to be discontinued now. The only options are Linn oriented like the Hercules II, and the Rega PSU.
At this point I give up. Does anybody have some suggestions for a speed control system that is affordable?
