Turntables in Modern Filmmaking

It's always interesting to me how turntables (and vinyl records) have situated themselves in modern society as sort of a... cool, trendy niche.
They seem to have withstood the test of time and i'd go so far as saying they've achieved an iconic status in the mainstream media.

I've seen two recent movies in the past month that star some lovely looking turntables, the first being the 2010 remake of The Mechanic, which I think is one that many people are familiar with already. Jason Statham's character has this nice little setup in his home.

The second is Looper, a movie which came out recently this year. Joseph Gordon-Levitt's character is seen using this turntable near the start of the film in his first apartment, and again later on in his second apartment.

I too have noticed recent movies as well as television series have turntables in use.

I think it is more than a nostalgic token tribute to the past, as there is a worldwide acknowledgement that turntables sound really great, and are the medium of choice for most of us who strive for quality.

The movies (and television) reflect the reality, and that reality is of a listening experience that includes turntables . . . :scratch2::scratch2::scratch2:

There is a BBC series called Luther - where he has a cool table on his window sill - I wonder - is that really hooked up? Cool hookup because I cannot see any preamp/receiver etc - or is it just sitting there to look cool.
 
Funny when I read the thread title I immediately thought of "The Mechanic." Too bad it gets fried in the end.
 
Did you ever notice that when depicting one of these big city apartment stereo systems, you RARELY if ever see more than JUST a component (like a TT) or speakers, almost never both. HOUSE MD always had a SOTA TT and speakers in his office.

I notice it that with ay electronics items. As they never seem to be hooked up or lack the correct amount of wires coming from it.

The Campaign also has an older TT in it.
I've noticed a few will Ferrell Movies have vintage TT's in them

I noticed the usual lack of amp/pre-amp equipment as well. In The Mechanic, Statham's character has what looks like a McIntosh amp on the rack next to the turntable and tube amp, curiously, it is gone in the final shot of the film where the house is destroyed.

lol, I watched an episode of Two And A Half Men yesterday and noticed a shelf in the background that was filled with old 8 track players.

Perhaps the use of turntables is because they photograph well and show interesting design shapes and mechanical ideas. A CD player - meh, a box with a drawer, usually black.

A TT also implies a certain fastidiousness to the character, someone who care enough about his music on vinyl to treat it carefully to be involved with its playing.

Not that other sources don't require involvement, but the steps in choosing and playing vinyl allow for some movement and dialog.
