TV Optical can't be selected in input list

Hi Y'all -

I have a new Yamaha RX-V6A. I also have an older 65" Samsung TV (one of the ones with a proprietary input connection and an umbilical cord to the HDMI input box).

On occasion, I want to have the TV audio flow to the AVR. I spent this morning trying to enable ARC. Input 4 of the Samsung's input box is the ARC connection. I plugged in there and then selected that output and turned on ARC.

On the Yamaha end, I plugged in on the "output" HDMI that is the only one with ARC capability. I then referred to the Yamaha manual and went through, step-by-step, enabling ARC. I then went back to the beginning and double-checked each setting.

Testing ARC, I got nothing on the outputs of the Yamaha. I know that the Samsung is sending because there is a graphic of the audio signal showing that it is playing to HDMI4. After futzing around all morning I gave up on ARC.

PLAN B - If I can't skin the cat with ARC, I'll do it with optical! I first went to the Samsung & verified that its audio was broadcasting to the TOSLINK output of the umbilical box. The Samsung's audio signal graphic showed output to the optical jack.

I then checked the optical cable to verify that red light was coming out at the Yamaha end - it was. I then plugged the cable into the Yamaha's optical input, checking (twice) that the cable was properly and fully inserted with the click that showed "fully inserted." Then, referring to the Yamaha manual, I assigned "TV sound" to the "Audio 1" input.

I then tried to select "Audio 1" from the input menu, but it is not there! I double-checked to ensure that "Audio 1" was enabled - it was; then I double-verified that all the settings were per the Yamaha manual. Tried again to select "Audio 1" as an input source, but again it was NOT there.

What dumb thing have I missed? Thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome aboard Boom..

Find yourself a ten year old smartass  .... Taken from " Analog Man " - Joe Walsh

I'm sure someone a little more familiar with Yamaha HTR's will be along shortly..

all i know is turn it off and back on . plus a recent one with hdmi and the device changing input number to a name .

Check the Sound menu in the Samsung, make sure the Sound Output is set to Optical and then make sure the setting is for PCM.

I was afraid someone would ask about the Samsung model - LOL

I’ll dig it up tomorrow. An audio amigo pointed out to me that if all I wanted was Yamaha sound for cable TV input, the Cox box itself has an optical output. But if I’m watching online content from the internet (YouTube for example)

I reviewed the C-Net article on HDMI-ARC and was able to get that working. Therefore, the optical TOSLINK question has become moot. Thanks to all for the responses. While taking down the optical cable, though, I think I inadvertently discovered the reason that the optical connection wasn't working. The Samsung box is formed of really thin sheet metal. The snap for the optical connection is actually the sheet metal housing of the box. As it turns out, the box is SO thin that it can (and did) deform as the optical plug is inserted, leaving you to THINK that the plug is properly seated when it really isn't. I believe that to be the cause of the "no audio via optical" issue in the first place.
