Tweeter swap out on a Polk R40

Finally got a laid back Saturday so decided to ditch the tweeters on my Polk R40's that just never sounded that great in the three years I have had them. I was thinking of using the CTS phenolic ring tweeter but remembered I had a pair of Samsung speakers in the garage. The Samsung cone tweeters looked decent so I made a pair of adapter rings so the mod is not permanent. Well after I was done the difference was positive, cymbals sound more natural along with the highs in general and the spl seems to be a good match. On the negative I was appalled at how cheap the Polk tweeters were made. The tiny hole in the dome of the Polk was a attempt at making them less shrill, like Polk did to the Peerless tweeters. I may try the CTS tweeters but the new cone tweeters may be in there to stay.

They only had a hole in them for a few days my last ditch effort to tame them. Predictably it did not affect them at all, they sounded like they have from day one when I got them.
 
Ok, a better idea would have been to increase the resistor value for the tweeter.

Those were relatively cheap speakers aimed at home theater use, hence the brighter top end. They are not a good choice for music.

That they are (were) any bright recordings with boosted highs (Ryko Disc) I would turn the treble down. I got them used pretty cheap, been meaning to do something with the tweets for some time, just have not had that time. One big improvement was adding poly fill to the cabs which had only a tiny foam pad behind the top woofer and loosely stuffed the port and the bass tightened up nicely. I am surprised how nice the Samsung tweeter sounds and integrated with the over all sound. Eventually I am going to build a nice pair of speakers but until then these will have to do.
