Twin Sons of Different Mothers KLH 5/Optimus 5

Sounds like someone replaced the tweeter in there. Both my Optimus 5's and Nova 8's (same speaker) had a 4 ohm tweeter, which looked identical to the mids except for a slightly different magnet. The Nova 7b's used 16 ohm tweeters, I wonder if that's what is in yours?

Just picked up a pair of the Optimus 5's at the local GW, cases and grilles in pretty good shape, but some %#$@ tried to use spray foam insulation to hold 1 of the woofers in, I guess he lost the screws.

These have an 8ohm woofer, 2 4ohm mids in series, and a 16ohm tweeter. Its a good thing I opened them up before I hooked them up, one speaker had 3 mids in it, the other had both tweeters (one wired in series with the other mid). Good news is all the drivers ohm out good, I am currently trying to repair the damage. And ordering new caps for the crossovers.

Just a note for those interested, 3-caps, all 50v, 3.3uF, 6.8uF, and 33uF.

Two mids and a tweeter, sounds like you've got a pair of Optimus 5b's there.

Iv'e got two pair of the five's. I might run them through a realistic quad reciever. Thanks Livin4 for the cap values, saves me seaching.

I had the 5 -Bs years ago and blew the tweeters very quickly.
I installed a set of Realistic super tweeters and they were better than new.

I think the tweeters were the only weak point in the speaker, they had great sound and good balance.

like most manufactures Tandy had things made for them to sell.
That woofer in the realistic, I have a pair of them, really nice specs for a supposedly cheap woofer. FS is 20hz which is pretty rare.

I had a pair myself. I bought them new, in I'm guessing around 75. I replaced the tweeter with a Fostex bullit horn the Shack was selling at the time. The woofers in mine had a ring of hard material in the center half. Had a rough feeling to it. I remember they were on sale for half price. Great looking cabs.
