Two Questions, Help please

First, I have a pair of older ratshack woofers Cat # 40-1026.
Can anybody tell me what type of enclosure these want? (Ported VS Sealed)
Also approximate size?

Also, I have been pondering buying a WooferTester. Does this measure all parameters or just impedance. I want to get into building boxes and would like to be able to test parameters to build proper boxes.

Thanks in advance!!

Cheers :beerchug:

The woofer tester will measure all the parameter you will effectively use to design by! It is a good program.

BE SURE to properly caliberate EACH time you use it, also place your test speaker on a stury platform and have no back ground noise going on that will vabrate the test speaker cone.

Are they 10's? Paper cone or polypropylene cone? I'd get the woofer tester, as Doug suggested, if your going to build an enclosure. It's the only way to properly tune/build the cabinet to the woofers parameters.

Assuming for the moment that the published specs hthman linked to are correct, with a Qts of .83 and a Vas of 297 liters, I'd put it in a sealed cabinet. That's a high-ish Qts for a ported box.

Definitely use the published specs in the link. These were likely off the shelf replacements for a number of RS bookshelf speakers.

WinISD program recommends a sealed box of the following dimensions:

60" W
96" H
36" D

118 CUBIC FEET!!!!! :yikes::yikes:

Does this seem right??

Just as an aside, a high Qts also indicates that it would presumably work well with an open baffle. Try it out on a large piece of cardboard (maybe glue up two layers) as a baffle and listen to some music.

Second part: The woofer tester is excellent, be sure to buy a postal scale for added mass measurements and a couple of egg's worth of Silly Putty (the best added mass you can use).

Best Regards,

That woofers specs clearly indicates an open/infinite baffle is the only realistic way to use it. The Vas and Qts are simply too high for any reasonable enclosure unless you wanted to eq the living crap out of it.
