Two sizes of Harman Kardon Rabco ST-8 turntables

Hi all, anyone know any details about the two different sizes of Harman Kardon ST-8 turntables? I have one of each:

One is 2-3/4" tall (high) , black brushed anodized sidewall, logo on the right side, with the baseplate recessed up into the sidewall.

One is 2-1/4" tall (high), black brushed anodized sidewall, logo on the left side, with the baseplate flush to the bottom of the sidewall.

Because the taller sidewall unit's baseplate is recessed up into the sidewall, and the shorter one is flush, the TT's are ultimately the same height.

Both units have the muting circuit, as well as the pulley, side shaft to rotate the guide rod to break the friction between it and the Delrin bushings. So they are both ST-8's.

From a few posts, I've gathered that the taller sidewalled ST-8 is common, as folks have commented on its slightly clunkier look.

Anyone encountered the difference?

I’m not sure how much difference there is in height. I have another ST-8 packed away somewhere and I don’t know about that one, but the case on one I am using seems to be about 2-1/2” high.

Hi Bill, nice! I see you have some quick-change wands handy.

That looks to be the shorter version, with the Harman Kardon logo on the left side. Here are the two I have. The one on the right with the logo on the left appears shorter overall, but that's because I hadn't finished installing the feet. When installed, they would be the same overall height.

Yes, there is a narrow recessed channel next to the sidewall (probably about 3/8”) but the center of the baseplate is even with the bottom of the sidewall.

Over the years I had acquired a couple of ST-7s along with a couple of ST-8s, but no longer have the ST-7s. I actually had an ST-4 when it was first introduced, but have not had that for decades now.

Here's a photo of mine. The logo is on the left side and the height of the upper chassis it 2-1/4" although the bottom does protrude about 1/2".

@Canmex I see your feet are missing the knurled / textured rubber wrappers. If you PM me, I'd be happy to send you 4 reproduction ones, look like this: IMG_3402.jpeg IMG_3401.jpeg
