Two speakers i need to know more about

Let's get this out of the way
  • yamaha as2100
  • Lumin t1
  • Kimber 12tc

That's it. I just stream tidal/MQA and play from my usb.

I am at ~50/50 sit and listen vs walk around and listen. Like the Vandersteen sound but not really the positioning requirements.

I am still thinking about the Vandersteen 3a. But also Vienna Acoustics or Tekton Pendragon or Double Impact. A few others. Maybe Martin Logan 60xt, one of the Salk Songs, or the classic HD. I doubt there is a speaker you could list that I have not read about. 5000CAD is a stretch, 3000CAD is just right.

More important than clarity and detail for me (if I had to choose to sacrifice a bit of one for a bit of the other) is bass stability and lack of listener fatigue. I don't need it to play the lowest note on the pipe organ, but I need it to play a 30-35hz electro bass line at about as loud as you possibly listen in a normal sized room without cracking a sweat.

But the speakers above are not the issue at the moment, as there is much info available. The ones my list that I cannot seem to find a review on anywhere, either formally or informally here on audio karma or other sites, are:

1) Opera Quinta SE

From the little I read about the Quinta I am thinking its on the warm side of the ledger as its designed for 50w and tubes. May not have the bass slam but probably a real nice and easy listen? This would appeal to me. I will be auditioning these and the Vienna acoustics side by side shortly. Another reason I am drawn to these is that they are designed for 50w while my Yamaha has 90w. Thus I would probably get as much out of these speakers as would be possible.

Looking at the Halo 1 design we have two 12 inch woofers, sealed cabinet, and a soft dome. These are probably so far on the warm side of things to almost be a vintage sound? I am not totally opposed to this. The sealed cabinet also suggest to me that the bass from the huge drivers will be phenomenal, but also perhaps not too bloaty? This is something that I would seriously consider even if it might not be the typical "audiophile" sound. Get a lot for the $ (100lbs each) and he is known to use good crossovers.

If you have listened to either of these in your home please let me know if my hypothesis' of these two are correct or out to lunch? Any other thoughts would be appreciated as well.

Reading about speakers is in no way an acceptable substitute for actually listening to them. Sure it can help narrow down the selection process but ultimately will not ensure anyone's satisfaction with their sound.

Hence, why I am asking here before I buy. When you cant audition, you do your best with the information you have.

Halo is not sealed, it is ported. Vintage sound? Buy 'vintage' then.

The ports on the back - I can see you didn't read the speaker description at all - they are 7" on the Opera not 12
The Opera's are Nominal 4 ohm - meaning they can drop lower than that = HARD LOAD. I would not use these with tubes.

Tyler uses inexpensive Chinese drivers - haven't been impressed with his speakers lately.

Price point - the Opera's will certainly not be the same price as the Tyler's.

The operas are available for 3700 CAD locally for me. Halos are 2400 USD including shipping. Pretty close in price.

the halos have 12 inch woofers, which I indicated.

I dont have tubes, which I indicated, but the operas are marketed as good for tubes. I have a yamaha as2100 integrated amp.

Halos look sealed to me.

If I wanted to buy vintage I would buy vintage and would not have posted my above question. I dont want a vintage sound specifically, but would not be upset. I am not picky, I just want a sense of how these two stack up to others I am considering...some of which I can audition, some of which I cannot.

It is proving difficult to find someone who owns these!

The odds are good that you will receive information, but then the goods may be odd and you're left none the wiser.
 
Keep an open mind my friend. Narrowing down comments from those who only heard your 2 selected speakers can limit you to 2 selected speakers that you have never heard. I get frustrated when my threads are crammed with other stuff but do learn to filter the best from them.

I dont need to ask about the other speakers as it would be redundant. There are countless threads and reviews on all the others. I will probably audition everything, even perhaps others which people suggest. But I know I will never get to audition the halo's and its in a price category where I may be willing to take a flyer and deal with the consequences...maybe. It would not be the end of the world if it does not work out.

These countless other threads and reviews can be helpful in forming maybe 10-20% of a decision making opinion. Ideally in order to decide which speakers to buy you would audition everything, but that is impossible. Thus the only thing available is to use internet reviews and experiences to triage what to listen to or what to consider...and go from there. Its imperfect, but its reality. When you read enough reviews over time, and then take that information you read and compare it to your experiences when you have auditioned, you start to see a pattern in what types of things to pay attention to and what to ignore, and which reviewers have similar experiences as you and which do not. For instance, I tend to disagree with most of the reviews on totem, but do agree with an assessment of focal 900 series...after extensively auditioning them both.

But there are no threads or reviews on these two, this is the only reason I am tyring to focus this thread. Creating another thread for any of the others would be a waste of everyones time.



If anyone is reading this while looking at the opera quinta se or the tyler acoustics halo 1 sitting in their living room, I would be very grateful if you shared your experience :)
 
You can't really share someone else's experience listening to speakers because we all hear differently. A review from someone else is meaningless. You just have to hear for yourself to make an opinion.
 
If all your looking for is my opinion on what I like , I guess the rest of the guys won’t care, too much ....

It sounds like you want into the next level of Speakers, something fun and amazing ..
From the list your interested in, I only have Experience with TEKTON (Seas Pendragon’s) & (Cinema sub).
I’m still learning and dreaming of a better Source,& DAC, but very happy my system as a whole...!

NIGHT AND DAY DIFFERENCE between the two systems!!!,! The SPEAKERS made the BIGGEST difference.

I bought the speakers first, they were so good I had to upgrade the other equipment..
I’m glad I bought the speakers first, because I could hear the upgrades as I made them..
IMO FOR THE MONEY TEKTON GIVES A DECENT PRODUCT
This what I would buy if in the market today::
TEKTON— Electrons with upgrades $3,000..
— (2x) Compact or Enzo subwoofers. $1,200-$1500..

They are NOT THE ONLY good for the money speakers out there, but the only ones I have used in my home.
I went to 2 audio shows this year , to compare my system to others. Honestly only a hand full of rooms
( that I listened to ) sounded noticeably better than mine..most of them with Ridiculous Price Tags..
Others that I’ve heard at shows and impressed with are,
RYAN speakers,
SPATIAL Speakers
VOLTI speakers—. ( very nice , I would Trade my speakers for VOLTI )

if reviews from someone else are meaningless, why is this site so popular? Why does stereophile exist?.

Every human characteristic and behavior at a group level is predictable with x% error. Knowing what most people think about something that you have not personally experienced is, in fact, statistically predictive of the likelihood that you will also like it...to put it very generally. It not perfect, and nothing is 100%, but drawing on others experiences to help you form your own in the absence of complete information is how we reason and function in every aspect of life. There are not 6 billion unique assessments of sound on the planet. We fall in a curve with most people in the middle and some on the tails. I have the same ears physiologically as pretty much everyone else, maybe a bit different, may I process sound a bit different, but over a large enough sample, we fall into categories with many other similar people. Heck, big corporations run the world on this premise, predicting what we do and do not like so they know what to sell. This is no different.

But my question was not this. My question was the simplest question you can imagine. It was not even really a question, just an invitation for someone to share with me their opinions.


Again, if you have these speakers right now in your house, please tell me what you think of them.

I am not looking for the right answer, I am looking for the range of answers from a variety of people who have heard these speakers.

awesome! Thank you. Why did you go with the seas pen instead of the regular. I am still very seriously considering pendragons but I am having trouble getting over the looks TBH haha. I have heard of ryan and volti, but not spatial. Will check it out.
 
(Pendragon’s) ..Was afraid they wouldn’t fit and had to worry about the WAF.. (Too BIG)
I was new , and a bit scared of spending too much money on something I hadn’t heard..!!
So I saw TEKTON’s site/blog ,, in his July 2016 post there was a bunch of sales on speakers,,
I found these with upgraded caps and grills for $1600..
$500 off — YEAH
I spoke with Eric on the phone, He made me feel like I was getting the level of Speakers I was after ,,
and a GREAT DEAL,, his voice just did something, you know like you feel like your giving it away to cheap..
I’m sure there is better speakers out there, but for $1600 delivered (no tax) to Ca...?.
I’m Happy..
I don’t think anyone is going to not like the
Enzo 2.7. or even better the Electrons
as a introduction into “high end” audio systems..

Two speakers I've not heard of.
And I'm probably not the only one.
And even those who have heard of them may not have ever actually listened to them.
That is one of the problems with asking about specific brands and models, particularly lesser known ones.
 
I own the last 3 versions of the Opera Quintas plus I have the latest Secondas as well. I love these speakers, needless to say. Yes, you could say they are on the warm side, so to speak. If you like the Klipsch sound, the Operas are not for you. I also like the styling of the Operas. The Italians know how to build a beautiful speaker.

These speakers feature a 4 ohm impedance. I am using a McIntosh MC152 to power the speakers. There is plenty of bass, that should not be a concern for you. Any other questions, contact me.
