Two Turntables - Using a RCA Switch?

Hello,

I am looking to hook up two turntables to one receiver and the only viable method i've researched is using a RCA splitter box and running it to my receiver. Does anyone have any experience using these boxes and if they work well (without a humming noise). I am also interested on how I am going to ground my two turntables since most of these boxes dont have any sort of ground wire attachments. If you have a reliable RCA splitter box in mind, please feel free to share which one it is. And if there's any way to work around this, please let me know.

I now use a Musical Fidelity M6 Vinyl, it has 3 Phono Inputs, all selectable for MM or MC.

your turntable has a built in preamp? If not, you must use the phono input.

I don't think this old Pioneer turntable has a preamp. And there is only one phono input on my old Pioneer reciever. I guess I'll have to either get a second reciever/pre amp for my second turntable or look into a splitter. If I use the splitter, I can just use the ground connection on the reciever for both, correct?

I know it's not "hi-fi approved", but you could always look into a simple DJ mixer -- it's kind of what they were made for.

Generally they've got two phono inputs, two grounds, a phono preamp, a mixer to switch between the two decks (or mix them together for actual DJ work) and a line output.

Two possible solutions here...

1) Use the RCA switcher and connect the two tunrtables to it, with the output going to the Phono jacks on the receiver. Run both grounds to the ground post on the receiver.

2) Get a separate phono preamp. Lots of choices there. Run one turntable to the Phono jacks. Run the other to the separate phono preamp and then into the Aux jacks. They can share the ground post on the back of the receiver.

Either way will work.

An RCA switcher is what you want. The thing that separates the cheapos from quality is noise. The design and quality of the components has to resist outside interference and maintain positive contact. No room for a cheap switch here. The Niles AXP-1 fits the bill. No longer made, but you should be able to pick one up off Craigslist for $50

If you want to do it on the cheap, I think the cheapest way is to buy a used phono preamp and give up an auxiliary in or tape in. Still cheaper than buying another amp and speakers. Or you could search for a receiver or amp with dual phono inputs. They do exist.

If you are buying a switch box and depending on your budget I’d seriously consider getting a separate phono preamp instead. It’s an easy way to get some tubes into you’re setup.

I'd get a phono preamp for 2nd table. If you have a spare RCAline input. Maybe a Schit Mani or Emotiva XPS-1. They are nice examples. And often can be found used. I bought both of these used on AKs Bartertown from AK subscribers.
Or maybe a Switcher like this Rek-O-Kut, for 2 turntables. It has a ground post. Pricey at $55

Or, an RCA switcher like this I got on ebay, from Hong Kong. This version has 2 RCAs on left switch and 4 RCAs on right switch. More than your asking for. But, there are versions with fewer RCA pairs. No ground post. This was about $55.

Or, Nobsound Little Bear RCA switcher. Cheaper, without enclosure. Can't remember if I tried with phono inputs. 1 RCA X 2 RCAs.

I’ve used the Schiit Sys passive pre to switch sources for my headphone amp. Super clean. On a whim I tried it with 2 turntables and was really surprised how clean it was. Just keep the volume all the way up. On the other hand for an ultra-low budget phono-pre the Art DJ is amazingly good for $50. I’ll second the Emotiva XPS-1 as well, I listen to one daily.
