Two-way speaker system, WAY horn-loaded

Up-DATE! Up-DATE! We want an UPDATE!

More work than posting. I have applied stain and an initial coat of polyurethane finish to both speakers minus a few spots that can't be seen.

I am currently in process of putting together the chamber. I am using wood inserts to allow for use of 10-24 machine screws. That will allow the chamber to be modifiable if desired.

I'm really happy with the stain color and subsequent look. Conversely, I wasn't so happy when I spilled the quart of stain on myself and my floor. My legs now have a very cheesy tan.

Getting the look of the stain "right" took longer than I had thought. It was eventually accomplished by the folk at Sherwin Williams and the results are very rewarding.

The polystyrene model came in very handy when flipping and moving these around on my concrete floor. I'm hopeful to have music running through them by the end of this 3 day weekend.

I've heard them with JBL LE-15B, Yuichi wood horn and Great Plains 399 and JBL supertweeter.

They sound really, really great. They have that big-as-life sound that you can never reproduce with any smaller speakers I've heard. Right now I'm listening to Tannoy GRF-R's, which are a a similar but smaller cabinet. They sound somewhat similar, but... a lot smaller! This winter I will be turning my Imperials into a very similar system in my basement. It's worth the size.

Oh...Tannoy GRFs, eh? very interesting. What size drivers do those cabinets allow? I was looking at some GRF plans as a potential enclosure for my Lambdas with the unity horn for mids/highs.

I read through the whole thread (and it was worth it) and, by now, you Imperial builders have probably reached an acceptable result. I understand that Steve Deckert has about the most recent practical experience with this enclosure.
I built a full-range driver BLH, Ron Clarke's Fostex based design, which had an inherent flaw in the compression chamber volume. Since Tubino's Imps had the smaller compression chamber, I would be curious as to how he dealt with that.

The trouble with any sort of design like a corner horn is that they are typically only optimized for a very small set of drivers. I'm interested in using something like GRF style corner horns for some Lambda TD15M drivers, but I'm afraid I'll need a total redesign of the crossover to make them perform adequately.

Those Lambdas would probably shine in a back loaded horn. Since the range of the woofer is up to 2000hz (per the advertizing ) and it is 97db, low Qts, with Fs of 34hz all point to achieving some killer bass through a horn. Fire up Hornresp and see what it models like would be my suggestion.
From just a look at the plans at Tubino's gallery (from Kiewa Valley), it doesn't really impress me as getting the most out of the back wave. I have heard the dual concentrics in a less complex horn and they did deliver some effortless bass. I'm thinking that it has more to due with the quality of the driver than the design of the horn.
I can't think of a corner horn, off-hand, that would marry well to the Lambda but that might be a positive thing because those drivers have a lot of quality and should probably have their own design.
A lot of folks will say that there are going to be phase issues and smearing of frequencies and all other such with back-loaded horns but I think most of that is inconsequential, especially with a well designed horn.

Well, I have unity horns for 300hz up, so I'll be wasting some of the capabilities of the Lambdas (4 TD15Ms) but if I get things right, it should shine. :)

Tubino and others,

I enjoyed reading this thread and appreciate the level
Of knowledge you guys all have as to the horns.

I have a question, though.

Does anyone have better plans of Jensen Imp 52
Version? I am planning to build a pair of cabs
But because of lack of relevant experience
Want to get hold of somewhat better plans with
All dimensions.

Hi, Guys

Rescued this post, better late than never

Why?

the theme of the bass horns

My current system tri-amping with single ended amps,

Bass: Sep amp 6550 Woofer Tru-sonic 150W sealed enclosure (Altec 861B, Madrid cabinet) small cabinet (500Hz)

Mids: Set 300B 250Hz wood midrange tractrix horn JBL LE5-2 (500-5Khz)

HF: Selenium D220Ti Selenium HM 17-25 horn (>5Khz)

electronic crossover

the next step

JBL 4530 scoop with the tru-sonic 150W

going in the right direction?

I accept your suggestions

Thanks

Hey Martin, glad you resurrected the thread, I reread it and there is a lot of great information passed along.

As to your question about direction: how can there be a wrong one as long as you're building it your self? Most of the time, I get more reward out of the process then out of the result.
Practically, the JBL 4530 is a tried and true design so not much worry about the inital plan. The driver mating might be great and maybe, not so much. The suggested driver, the 2205 is an unknown, to me.

If one of your criteria is to keep the Trusonic driver, a bit of reading at Martin Kings site may turn up a better design for that particular woofer.

Good luck with your project!

and so we

need a good wood veneers and good 10" woofer, fs:45hz (Eminence Beta 10", Beyma 10BR60 good option

Nice, Martin! How are they sounding so far?

You work fast! A project like that would take me most of a year. :)

Thanks Redboy, is back load rear horn for 10" woofer with 8" woofer have good bass

Thread resurrection AGAIN !

Having done a 180 and trying tubes I realized that I needed an efficient speaker ...... I ventured into a pr of Heathkit As 101's (Valencia clone) .... I am blown away by the realism they produce ....me like !!!

I want to move in this direction as I have DIY'd speakers in the past to much satisfaction and the comments I see mimic what I have witnessed and where I want to go with speakers right now.

I also am cheap ! and notice this : http://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-pa380-8-15-pro-woofer--295-034

A really competitively priced Dayton pro woofer. It has low QTS / Low FS / reasonable vas ... I'm wondering how close these woofers may get me to my goal (for cheap !)

Questions :

1) I want to waveguide them (already notice the vertical dispersion issues with the 811's ) and wonder if Zilch's wavequide with the selenium is a decent candidate for HF

I've finally concluded that a Behringer is in my future..... if you're going to play with this stuff active xover makes sense to me.

2) Most importantly : is the woofer a candidate ? and if so I am looking at either a scoop application vs a rear loaded horn (and if rear loaded horn: what throat area and compression chamber volume values are a starting point (I notice various formulas kicked around for the same thing and comments that some formulas are more applicable to some drivers ...I am a little confused). In a back loaded is throat area the one side X 2 ?

I hope some of the "players" in this thread are still active with this and can offer some opinions / advice. Thanks

My two cents:
The woofer looks like a good value, and could be used with hornloading.
But... IMO, the only kind of bass loading worth doing is the extreme kind, where you supplement the falling response at the low end, rather than just add to the rising response portion... Forget the scoops and A7 clones, and the Tannoy GRF-R is okay but still too small.

In my view, if space and other considerations rule out the giant solution, go with a 5-6 cu ft box, the best woofer you can afford, and the waveguide solution above it. In other words, save money and time on the cabinet construction (over a horn cabinet), put it into something like Lambda TD-15Ms (about twice the price of the Daytons, and worth every penny), and you'll still have tremendous bass, with 98+db efficiency! I'm talking from experience on this one. A very sturdy box is key.
