I saw him on one of his last tours. He must have rented a train to haul everything and everyone for the concerts. I've never seen that many musicians and instruments on a stage before or since. Stacked up on scaffolding , horn sections off in the wings, it was crazy! The best part though was a tape of him playing his guitar nonstop for about an hour before the show while people filled the place up.

The "ten piece band", as the last tour ('88) was called, played 60 different songs and had practiced 40 more! The album The Best Band You Never Heard in Your Life is compiled from that aborted tour. There are also some excellent bootlegs out there at the usual downloading sites. Planet of My Dreams has some great Zappa links too! Thanks for posting!!!

I had always thought that Broadway the hard way was the name of his last tour? Saw him back to back in Providence and Boston on that tour. Jim
 
Yeah, I saw three nights in a row during the '88 tour at The Tower Theater in Philly.

Different set list each night. Killer versions of Stairway to Heaven, I am the Walrus, and Whipping Post - amongst many others.

If any of you know the DVD "Does Humor Belong in Music" There was a point where someone asked him a stupid question at the Palace of Fine Arts in SF at a symposium and my friend and I snorted. Frank pointed to us and said "What he said".
