U-Turn Orbit Theory

Have you considered an acrylic mat? They come in several translucent colors as well as clear. Shown on a U Turn TT.

i have a felt mat, a cork mat, a D-Stat mat and a rubber mat. I use an acrylic mat on my VPI. My spare TT (Micro Seiki DQ-43) has the original rubber mat.
I wasn't particularly interested in the U Turn Theory when I clicked on this thread. Just interested in others personal journeys into vinyl playback. And then you go and provide a link for acrylic mats. Never occurred to me I might want one. Now, thanks to you I have one, in "Green Lit", coming my way. Sigh.

Hi,
Is the green Lit mat 12.00” diameter or 11.50” ?the description shows 12.00”
Thanks for your feedback.

Oh now you’ve done it! Went back for a “Red Lit”.

I appreciate everyone's input on this thread I was just scanning it again a couple days ago. I'm running an Orbit today and extremely happy with the turntable and U Turn as a whole. Seriously considering the Theory as an upgrade and all this dialogue helps (as in, helps empty my bank account) so thanks :)

Glad to see U-Turn stepping into the ~$1k market. I remember the crazy long running thread following the difficult road to get the Orbit to market. No small feat. Hopefully other homegrown upstarts will do the same.

Thanks all - I did consider the acrylic but from U-turn -"you're more prone to static and slipping when starting/stopping". So now I'm considering cork..

Mine arrived to today and I have a question about the arm balance. The table is balanced with the level placed in the lower right corner as shown in the setup guide. The anti-skate is off. The arm balances; however, it has a slight drift back to the rest position. Is this normal? Even if I lift the table at the bottom right edge, it still drifts. It seems like the anti-skate is not fully off. Any help much appreciated. thanks!

Good point from U-Turn. This is why the clamp was recommended earlier in the thread. The cork mat has worked well for me. Curious to try this acrylic mat, too.

Have you asked U-Turn about the “drift” yet? I’ll check mine and follow up.

Wow - thanks for the quick response! I am going to email them.
I also recommend a clamp or weight. My preference is for a clamp as it allows for varying the amount of downforce as well as being easier on main bearings.
This makes sense and sounds like a great idea! Thanks! Off to research clamps!

Going to contact them - interested in what yours does. Thanks for offering to check!
I used a Neoteck scale to measure tracking and it measured 1.3g with the mat off so I increased the counterweight a hair to get the 1.5g.

Gosh, forgot to even mention - this this is absolutely beautiful! My photo does not do it justice. Going to try some easy calm jazz, Earl Klugh, Pat Metheny, Spyr Gyra, before I rip into the Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc.

Looking good! Curious - is that a DAC on top right - which one? And what are you using for amplification and speakers?

Thanks - its a Cambridge Solo phono preamp (top right). I use an Anthem preamp driving Mackie HR824 studio monitors.
A musician friend of mine had these in his studio and after hearing, I just had to have.

I'm not an expert, but I will post my thoughts on this turntable forthcoming.

Nice setup. Thanks for sharing. Looking forward to your impressions of the Theory.

Hi,
Is the green Lit mat 12.00” diameter or 11.50” ?the description shows 12.00”
Thanks for your feedback.
AG.
Honestly, it was such an impulse purchase (and yes, I blame you, JoeESP9) it didn't occur to me to look at the size. It's been delivered at home while I'm here at work so I can't currently verify but it says its 12" at Amazon.
We'll see.

So, split the difference- it measures 11.75". Go figure.
The crazy thing is it glows from the perimeter. Like it's internally lit. I think it's cool. Happy I got a color unit just for that effect. But, I'm easily amused. Though, as it is often said, YMMV.

Thanks for your feedback! 11.75 is enough to let the record edge to hang out.
Picture please!!

Mine arrived. I went with “RedLit” from “Mobile Pro Shop Acrylic Turntable Mat”.

Mine measures 11.625”. Just under the diameter of the Theory platter. I’ll probably track down a different one, for an exact diameter match. The red looks cool to me! Not edge “lit” though. I can’t speak to it addressing static, yet.

Sounds damn fine in here! Love this turntable. Tame Impala, today.
