Ah yes, Uli Jon Roth, one of my favourites:

Going to see him at Reggies, eh? Wish I could go, but it's my mother's B-Day party Sunday.

My mother went to see Queen with me back in 1980....bring your's along and I'll buy her a birthday beer!

Saw Uli perform several weeks ago in Santa Ana. Very good show. Opened with cover of "All Along The Watchtower"and Setlist was primarily Scorpion songs. His playing was great and his singer was very good. It was in a very small venue (Bar) with unremarkable acoustics but a very good performance.

I wish I could, but she's 75 and can't get around too good. But thanks for the offer, and I will have a beer with her! Let me know how the show was.

I've never seen him live but yeah... I'm a fan. I don't listen to much heavy-ish stuff but back in the 80s and 90s I played heavier guitar than I do today and he was in my top 25 for sure.

I generally prefer his more focused stuff with the Scorpions. I think I had everything he did with them plus the first two Electric Sun albums and his first solo album and his Molestation of the Four Seasons... I mean 'Metamorphosis'.

:D

A friend of mine plays guitar and his son drums. When his son was 16, they ran into Uli. The kid got to play with Uli and they still keep in touch. The neet of the full story is that Uli is a very nice guy. Awesome shredder and nice guy! A perfect combo. :)

Enjoy the meet/eat and greet! So jealous :)

I'm a huge Scorps fan, especially of that Uli era.....Fly To the Rainbow is probably one of my favorite albums by the Scorps.
His playing on Tokyo Tapes album is killer.....I always wondered what his career would have been like had he not gone the path he did after leaving Scorpions.

But for true guitar aficionados he is one of the best.

I've been listening to Taken By Force, Virgin Killers, Fly To The Rainbow, and In Trance all week....this is going to be absolutely epic! Dark Lady!!!

Well, anyone who's a fan of the early Scorpions era would've absolutely loved last night's show. For me it was the first time ever hearing songs from Virgin Killer, Taken By Force, Fly To The Rainbow, and especially In Trance (I think he played the entire album) performed live.
I remember taking the bus to the nearest record store that had a large import selection in 1982-83 to buy these on cassette and LP. I bought them without knowing any of the songs, but I was a Scorpions fan, and the first time I heard 'Dark Lady'....well last night was even better than that.
He plays with such soul and emotion, cliche' I know...but true. The setlist was perfect, personal favorites were 'They Need A Million', 'Sails Of Charon', and 'Dark Lady' that had a long, improvised break where Uli played the vocal melody on his guitar. They played until 1:00 AM, closing with Hendrix classics 'All Along The Watchtower', 'If Six Was Nine', and 'Little Wing'.

I hung around afterwards and talked to a recording engineer. He said the sound was the best they've had on this tour and the footage was excellent quality, much will be used on the upcoming documentary and double CD release later this year.

Sounds like a helluva show. The first time The Scorps ever came to the US, Uli had already left the group, so it was Matthias taking over. Now Matthias is a fine player himself, but IMO not even close to Uli as far as being soulful. Would have loved to have been there, but I had a beer with my mother at her B-Day party, then I jammed a lot of Uli-Scorps when I got home. Oh, well, maybe next time.............
I'll be looking for the documentary & CD. Thanks for the review!

Most those songs were my favorites from the early Scorpions years, I just found out two
days ago Uli Jon Roth will be playing at Paladinos in Tarzana CA. March 2 2013, it's a
small place about a 20 minute drive from me, he will be doing a two hour show there.

You have convinced me to go.:thmbsp:

I can't imagine not enjoying the show...I'd go again, no question about it. BTW, a couple of months ago I saw Michael Schenker. He played mostly UFO and his own MSG stuff but there was a lot of songs from Lovedrive and Animal Magnetism. Again, this was the first time I had a chance to see these great performers live. I'm so glad I live in this area!

I got a DVD of the Scorpions from a live show in 2006 and Uli Jon Roth made a special
appearance, I thought that was the best part of the show, he just seemed to be timeless
and still plays extremely well, I thought Uli Jon Roth performed better then the rest of the
band.

I dig all of Michael Schenker's work although he does not have the energy on stage that
he did back in the 80s.
I seen the Scorpions two or three times back in the early 80s, that band rocked from start
to the end of the show and it was a high energy show.

I had started to listen to the Scorpions around 1976 before they were very popular here in
So Cal, it was Animal Magnetism that exploded onto the airwaves and took them to the
top fast.
