In light of OMIs thread about "free money", I thought I'd do this again.

This time of year, I usually hear someone on the radio talk about unclaimed property, so I log on to this site and check. The link is below. You might have to navigate a bit depending on your state, but you'll eventually get to a place where you can type in your name (or someone else's) and see if the state has any unclaimed property for you.

Last year I found about $400 for my brother-in-law left over from a nasty divorce.

I will revive this very old thread as it is still relevent today.

My cautionary note is when your deceased parents are listed, depending on state I guess, documentation is a pain. When I was listed, I spent the time to fill out a form, received answer I had been approved, then a month or so later I received a tiny check. This did however, show the system worked.

Found $35 owed to my long deceased grandfather but all the hoops weren’t worth pursuing.

Found something for my grandmother. I recognized her name immediately, and the street address was where I was born and grew up. Haven't heard back from the state, so not sure it's going to go through.

$80.75 for my grandmother from the nursing home where she died in 2002.
$301 for my great uncle whose been dead since 2012. He was over 100 years old.
Doubtful that I could claim against either of those accounts.

Wow, $452.63 owed to my brother.....something to do with an escrow account.
Already notified him.

Edit: Well crap. My brother says he's seen the site before.
And saw the money he was due....a few months after he'd thrown out the required proof.
That's after holding onto the piece of paper for 15 years.

Hmmmm, I think I just poked a sore spot.

I know a couple people who have gotten money back from unclaimed property in Illinois. Some states it's easier than others. In some areas you just have to show proof of relationship and then they wait x number of days to see if anyone of closer relation comes forward. Other states require such stringent proof that even if it's owed directly to you it's nearly impossible.

If you are related to anyone deceased that is owed money and it's worth it to you to fill out some paper work then try. Worst case scenario you'll learn what is needed and might know another family member that can get it.

In WA state this is done through Dept of Revenue. I recovered $300 last year.

My wife checked the Washington state site a few months ago and got $35! Not quite enough for a good Wicks pizza, though.

In Washington state too. Just entered a claim for 0-$25. Says it's an FMS V DELL settlement.

Just a bump-reminder for unclaimed property.

Checked recently - seemed I had a couple refunds from ebay for overpaid postage. Instead of them putting it in my account, they sent it to CA unclaimed property. Only $6 or so, but it's my money, so I filled out the online form to get it back.

Check with your state.

Filed my claim yesterday, got an email that it was approved and my check is in the mail.

Just found almost $250 for one of my brothers. He submitted a claim and it was approved.

Unfortunately none for me or my other brother. Lol.

Found over a $100 for my deceased mother. The paperwork needed required all my 5 brothers (scattered around the globe) to sign (notarized) and some other stuff. Not worth the effort.

Pretty common. If it's someone deceased, it can be an issue.

I found several thousand dollars for a distant relative who passed, and her only daughter passed shortly after. I have no idea who to contact.

In North Carolina it is under the Department of State Treasurer at www.nccash.gov. Apparently I never got the check for an Autolite Spark Plug rebate due $10. They say fill out the paperwork should take them 90 days to get to it. I think it it has been more than three months nothing back from them yet.

I know someone that never settled their sister's affairs when their sister died. The other night looked up her sister's name she apparently had some money in the bank at her death will be telling my friend there is money out there. Site just said the amount "was over $100" along with the bank's name.
