UNDERSTATEMENT of the day(The TA-N80ES I scored!!)

I wrote about my getting a few items today from the shop One of them is a nice looking, HEAVY amp by SOny, a TA-N80ES. I THOUGHT it was special...It looks like the N-55 I have but a LOT bigger and heavier!!

So.....I do a little "looking around"...and VOILA!! This is a BEAST of an amp!! over 200w/channel, and the claim to drive ANY load even well below 4 ohms. Appears to have a big bank of caps, Meaty tranny and parallel P-P amps. Some even say MOSFET, I do not really know.

I DO NOT know what this needs. I suspect a channel is out, maybe both of them. Nonetheless...I figger' it was a worthy score.

Will I keep it?? Don't really know. I do not need it myself. Maybe it could be a "bargaining chip" to get me a CTC-5 RCA tv, (not necessarily working, but workABLE!!)

They didn't make in silver. Were black or, quite rare, champagne. An excellent amp. Very much worth the effort/$$ to send to one of our excellent techs for repair. Is not MOSFET. Strictly BJT on the power end of things. You can read about it here: http://www.thevintageknob.org/SONY/sonyes/TAN80ES/TAN80ES.html

In my opinion, Axel is too harsh on the TA-N80ES in his statements. I've owned a few and the previous TA-N77ES, as well, and have nothing but good things to say about them. And, when properly adjusted to the SM spec's, they do not run hot. At least my U.S. models did not. Is one of my favorite amps. A great find. You just need a matching vintage Sony preamp. I have the owner's and service manuals if you would like copies. Send me a PM with your e-mail address.

Post some pic's in the 'Show Us Your Sony's' thread in this forum.

Mine is black, like the one in the lower picture.

It is still in the trunk, I will take it out later today. I'll try and get a pix. or 2 this weekend.

I'll also try and see what may be wrong, if anything, with it. It has sat for a couple of years in the shop, I think.

NICE link. SIX outputs per channel!! This one loks up there with some PA amps in device count!! I KNOW mine has one ONE power tranny, (EI style),I saw that much through the vents. Probably the biggest, most powerful stereo amp I have. This would be an AWESOME party amp--probably could run 4 big speakers per SIDE on it!! (but I have MORE than enough "party stereos" and never need them anway.)

I do NOT think that Caver's "Mag amps" could take the punishment this guy could!! Carver is like a ""twin turbo 4". THIS beast is like a big V-10!!

The ta-77Es/80es is the last amp I need to round out my Sony ES collection. I'm jealous...

Yeah I know the "silver" version was called champagne - just trying to keep it simple. :D

That is a nutty good price!! I got $450 for mine just two months ago. Someone should jump all over this. Especially as the other two TA-N80ES amps are currently up to $356, each and won't stay there.

Darn my wallet! As figured, they didn't last long after mentioning it. Hope one of us got them!:thmbsp:  :thmbsp:

Aarrgh! Wish I'd seen those in time. Would have jumped on the E80 for sure and probably the N80 too. All gone now though, they sure didn't last long.

Once again.....

I would probably be willing to part with my N-80 for a CTC-5 RCA tv set, (ANY suffix, )complete, does NOT have to work, but have good CRT, fly, Power tranny, tuner etc and be "rebuildable".

Heck, I might be willing to toss in the N-55 too, if someone has a nice enough CTC- 5 and it can make its way here!! I do NOT have any plans to use either amp. (I KNOW the N-55 only needs one channel of outputs., the other side works.)BOTH would make a nice HT amp setup, but my projo is IN THE DOMINACE of my sister--and so I will not waste any money on putting together a system I would not get to use much, or for another person who thinks Soundesign ias a good stereo!!

I own a n80es and it is actually a great amp. I run it with a valve preamp (Luxman CL32) and a pair of Yamaha NS-1000X and it sounds really great. I will post some pics later.
Do you still have the owners and service manual?
Thanks!
