University vs. ElectroVoice

I am currently listening to the University 312 Diffaxial speakers and have an opportunity to get a pair of ElectroVoice 12TRX-B to install in my cabinets. Is there a huge difference between the two?

Would it be an upgrade?

Also - It states that one of the speakers needs a cross over cap replaced. Is this a difficult operation?

Replacing the crossover cap would probably not be hard -- usually they are under the bell covering the magnet. But I'd be cautious about why the seller hasn't done it him or herself if they know enough to know what the problem is. It may be as simple as you have to break a decal or paper logo seal, or pop off a glued on metal logo disc and they didn't want to risk damaging the cosmetics, but it also might be that they don't know if its actually the cap or perhaps the tweeter is out -- in which case whether a diaphragm is available or not becomes an important consideration. Oh wait -- its the EV with the dubious tweeter -- I think those are readily available, but account for the possible expense when deciding on the cost.
 
The 312 and 12TRXB are roughly comparable, I'd opine... although it's tricky as there were definitely multiple generations of the latter (the early, "brown" basket and the later more substantial looking "white" basket), and probably of the former, too.

Neither of these are high-end coaxes of their era.

Expect fairly high Fs and Qts, and not so extended (and, in the TRXB's case, at least, fairly aggressive) treble. Either would benefit greatly from new crossover capacitors. Diaphragms for the 12TRXB tweeter are available (although I think at this point they're all aftermarket - worth checking with EV, though).

The 12TRX would be in another league entirely, as would the Altec 601 Duplex (although the tweeter used in the latter is notoriously fragile).

FWIW, I like the even more modest EV "Wolverine" LT-12 coax at least as much as the 12TRXB.

I had a pair of mint EV's. I thought the single cap was a high quality oil and was told to leave it alone. I listened in a good cabinet and made a good open baffle for them. They were OK but not for anything but acoustic jazz or the like. Just what is best for the larger Klipsch units with the same tweeter. Sorry, I very much dislike the grainy, shouty thing.

Later heard a pair of Tannoy golds. Now there is something to take seriously. Never heard the University's.
 
Even that UCX 122 is fun to listen to -- no extreme high end at all, and kind of boomy, but punchy and involving.

Most of the grain and shout comes from the T-35...

Yeah the Tannoy and big Altec coaxes are in another league entirely; I am using Altec 604Es in the real hifi in the living room now, and I am very happy with them.
The only University coaxes I have much ears-on experience with are the early (stamped steel basket) 6201 coaxes, which ain't great. The pair I have would likely be considerably improved, though, with replacement capacitors in the XOs.
 
I've listenend to University 312 in ~3.2 cf sealed boxes a bit, as someone lent me a pair. It wasn't bad, but not that impressed. It's the later model with a round plastic waveguide for the orange-domed tweeter. The frame on these is thinly-cast and resonant, I'd prefer a quality stamped steel frame.

I had my University UCX-123 drivers in 9 cf vented Allied cabinets.
Driven by a Magnavox 8802 (6V6 PP) tube amplifier.....I WAS impressed!?

Maybe I impress easily though............................................

I love my 312's in their Tiny Mite. I must say the 308 in it is just as nice. I think the 312 needs more space. The Tiny Mite is probability smaller than what you got so I think your good. See Attached
