Unrestored Marantz 2235B - Mid knob sticks out

I just bought an unrestored Marantz 2235B from the internet. It sounds pretty good.

The knob for the "mid" sticks out a bit from the other knobs. I can't remove the knob or push it in further. There also seems to be some type of brass washer between the pot shaft and the faceplate. Is that brass washer supposed to be there?

My theory is that the mid pot was replaced at some time. The insides look pretty untouched though. So maybe it was done a long time ago.

What you are seeing is the brass nut that keeps the faceplate attached to the MID control. See part 0125 on the diagram below.
The knobs are just a press-fit and you should be able to pull it off. Sometimes with age they become stuck. One way to get it off without damaging the faceplate is to take two metal spoons with spoon lip under each side of the knob (with the round end resting on the faceplate). Then with gentle even pressure on the two spoon handles, press down to pry off the knob. (see the video link below) The knob has a plastic insert with a metal shell around it.

The knobs are not suppose to fit right up against the faceplate. Kind of hard to tell from the photo, but the Treble knob looks like it might be rubbing the faceplate. Not something I'd lose any sleep over. The nut holds the pot in place.

That brass nut looks OK. Make all of the knobs about the same distance from the faceplate. On my 2252B it is about 1/16" to 3/32" from the faceplate.

Nice! That's the receiver I had back in high school in the 70s! I have one to fix up too someday. Not my old one, that got lost somehow, but I found another. Are you planning to do some restoration?

Everything works perfectly and it sounds great. It is a very clean unit with little cosmetic damage. I think I will just enjoy it for now.
