Definitely a project. What makes this unusual is that it has a tuning meter instead of a "Magic Eye". Even the later model S3000-IV still had the eye; only the S3000-V had the meter. I've had both and strongly prefer the meter. Everyone says Sherwood changed their products constantly and I believe it.

This is a mono unit; there is space on the chassis for a stereo (MPX) adapter or you can connect one at the back. They also have an S2000 AM/FM attic find for $20.

It is a V chassis in an older case, older than the III label would suggest. Only the V had the meter. It could be bought as a mono that had both the internal and external mpx provision or the stereo version. The mono V is very scarce as by then most PA users just bought the am-fm tuner; no us for stereo.

Most interesting is the III label. It obviously has been laid over the original inscribed Sherwood name. But taking this label from another unit would be all but impossible without destroying it. Sherwood used a bond so tough it almost made it seem to be an integral part of the faceplate. This would lead me to believe someone got a new label from Sherwood.

What is the serial number? I wonder, and this is speculation only, if some Sherwood employee hit the old inventory parts bin and cobbled it together. The mono S3000V did not have Stereo written on the dial plate. Except for the faceplate label it could be someone had a stash of parts units and used them for a working unit but it would not explain the label.

For $20 getting the am-fm would be a no brainer as the am tuner is very good. The S2000 likely has the exterior mpx provision. As I like Sherwoods and these tuners, regardless of version are very good in terms of sound quality, I would even grab both. The mpx units are not all that scarce but the stereo indicator acc'y is very scarce but not expensive.

Hi, the seller says:

Ser No. 3 409415

Interesting to note that the back plate also says S-3000 III. As you suggest, this may be Frankenstein's monster. I had no idea there were mono models IV or V! You are a master of Sherwood knowledge! Thanks!

That would be a project for the seller; I don't have room for any more tuners nor time for any more projects!
