Upgrade my KG4’s currently paired with Marantz 2285

Hello, I have a Marantz 2285 paired with a pair of Klipsch KG4’s. I love the sound of the KG
4’s but I’m thinking about upgrading to a modern speaker that is under $2K. I have am liking the Wharfedale Heritage Linton, The KLH Model 5, KEF R3 and maybe the KEF LS50 Meta? I listen to mostly Indie stuff like Broken Social Scene, Wilco, LCD Sound System but also Classic Rock, Punk... I guess I just love music. (Fleetwood Mac's Rumors sounds amazing on my current setup) My Room living area is a little odd. Maybe 26ftx17ft but there is a kitchen off of that as well as an open foyer area. So it's not like a tightly enclosed box of a listening room. I don't have the ability to set up my speakers directly in front of my sitting area without tripping on cords. So it's kind of a funky layout. So speakers that are a little forgiving on placement would be nice. Again I think the KG4's sound great. Is something like when Wharfedales going to be a noticeable upgrade? What do you guys think? Any recommendation for something that pairs well with my Marantz and funky room layout?

That is a nice looking room. I like my KG4s, but have a lot of other speakers that offer a different presentation. Of those you list, I'd lean towards the Wharfedales. Though the Kefs are good, I tend to like less common speakers. That room looks stylistically perfect for Magnepans IMHO.

All will be a different sound over the KG4, if you can give them all a listen, that would be the deciding factor.
 
Since you like the KG4's I seriously doubt you will like the others as they offer an entirely different sound. Have you considered upgrading the crossovers in the KG4's?
 
Well one thing I don’t like about the KG4s is that they might be a little harsh and hard to listen to for extended times at louder volumes. Also the right speaker is starting to pop and flutter during some lower frequencies. I’m hoping that it is the speaker and not the amp. Maybe it’s a lose connection inside the speaker? What would the crossover upgrade do? (Maybe it would fix any wiring issues at the same time)
 
That room looks great!
But yeah, it is challenging for stereo and TV placement, I think your solution is the best possible.
Thank you for providing the floor plan, it would have been hard to understand with just a description.

if it were me, I would play around with different situational speaker placements, your current arrangement seems like it would be good for casual listening
But I would pull the speakers around to point at my listening position if I wanted to really settle down with some favorite tunes. Don’t the passive rears usually want to have a wall a certain distance behind them? A front-ported or sealed box might be more forgiving for your room.


regarding the low frequency popping and fluttering, you will get more answers in the Klipsch sub forum, probably focusing on the health of the woofer surrounds.

Mo' better sound. Your crossovers are pretty simple. There is a 3uF, 8uF and 33uF cap. Replace with Clarity CSA or Sonicap Gen I. There is also a polyswitch, which is basically a re-settable fuse. If you've never tripped it then replace with a 0.5 ohm Vishay Mills resistor.

The pop/flutter is due to an air leak. Check the surrounds including the PR for cracks. If none are found then try tightening the screws.
 
New caps may tame the highs or even the crites upgrades. But, you will need to ask is how much do you like the KG4 to put money to hope for improvements or putting that money for a new set of speakers.
 
I'd add the Tannoy Platinum F6 to that list of candidates, IMHO. They're just over $1200 a pair retail. A really astonishingly good speaker, IME.

Revels Concerta2 F36 awesome speakers these replaced my wharfedales 11.4s which are a nice speaker but I wanted more bass the Revels did not disappoint
