Upgrading Avira anti-virus to the 2013 version

I received a message on my desktop from Avira Anti-virus stating that I had to upgrade my version to the 2013 version, I thought "no problem" I got some free time...
I downloaded the new version and right off the bat it told me I had to "remove incompatible software" it highlighted Comodo Suite and Spyware blaster.
I have always used the Comodo firewall because it's trustier to me than the one that comes with Windows.
By the way, my Windows version is XP since the software I use for work still doesn't have a version for Vista, Seven, etc.
As soon as I began to install Avira my computer went into blue screen and started an endless rebooting cycle, I had to enter Safe Mode and remove Avira.:wtf:
I then downloaded and installed AVG and so far it has found 6 threats that the previous version of Avira did not detect.
I suggest that if anyone is going to upgrade Avira anti-virus in their system to backup the system before doing anything or consider using another anti-virus software.
I got lucky but others may not have the same luck I did.

i used to use and even recommend avira...i liked it,but it seems to have gone downhill in recent versions,it's a lot more intrusive with pop up windows etc..i can't say what the paid version is like but the free version has just become a PITA,they seem to have lost thier way.i went to AVG as well

Avira is scratched forever from my list, it was very frustrating to discover that it is not as effective as it used to be.

I got the Avira update this morning and installed it. It said I needed to remove Super AntiSpyware and Malwarebytes, but I just ignored that message. Zero problems.

Every time I try AVG, it flags 10-15 Windows system files as viruses and removes them without asking my permission. Epic fail.

These were real viruses, I don't use cracked or pirated software on my work computer due to legal matters and I don't use my work computer to surf the web even though it has an internet connection.

Plus AVG opens a window where you can recover your files from the quarantine folder.

Epic fail for those who don't read a user's manual.:D

Avira has become a pain to use. I switched to Avast several months back and haven't had cause for regret. AVG used to mess up my LAN connections.

did you scan the new avira before installing ? there is a chance it may have come with viruses especially if it came from a non secure server ..https should be in address bar .

Yes I downloaded it directly from Avira's site, that is what made me mostly upset.
I used to have Avast but it's incompatible with the software I use for work.
The bad thing about buying anti-virus software is that after a couple of years instead of them selling you an upgrade they just want to sell you a whole new software.
I don't see companies selling upgrade packs anymore.

I prefer Panda Cloud, no other antivirus is that light weight, you barely notice it's there, even on old computers.
