Urgent help needed with Yamaha CA1000 parts

Hello folks,

My Yamaha ca1000 integrated needs two new 18000uF lug type electrolytic capacitors as they are leeking badly, but I cannot source any in the original size which is 50d * 80 H or anything of smaller that will fit the space on the cap circuit board.

This size is the max that will fit in the original position due to the amplifier being so tightly packed with other components around the caps.

I have also looked at the 22000uF caps, but no luck in finding a size that will fit 2 caps in that spot side by side like the originals.

The brands I have looked at are Mundorf M-Lytic, Nichicon KG and BHC slits.
I cannot think of any other brand that makes good quality power smoothing caps.

If anyone has done this mod to a similar yamaha ca1000 amp recently, and advise where they sourced their caps from would be greatly aprreciated.

I reside in Australia so most likely I will have to have any caps imported from overseas.

If anyone does know where I can get the correct size caps, I will also be able to go ahead and replace all the electrolytic caps on all the boards as I have the original service manualfor the Yammie.

If I cannot find replacements to fit, I am afraid this amp will be ending up at the tip, and I do not want to do this as this is one of the sweetest sounding amps I have ever owned and I really want to fix it.

While I can't think of many places that sell stuff such as that...I like mouser, digikey, mcm, all electronics, and a few more. Also I wouldn't count out old tube radio repair sites, as often the older radios needed large capacitors.

The real question is the voltage the capacitors need to be and what they do in the amplifier. Though I would like to point out that 2 22,000uf capacitors in parrallel would equal 44,000uf (way, way more than you need...I think). Actually (and get multiple opinions on this) the 22,000uf caps would work, especially if its a filter variety, since cap values can sometimes be substitued with larger ones. I would be wary of too big a jump, though with a capacitor that size 4,000uf really isn't a huge deal.

I wish I could help more (maybe a more skilled member has the answers), but thats all I can think of. I hope you can get the amp fixed as i've heard good things about yamaha :yes:, a recapping should never hinder an amps return to glory.

When you say to be careful with going up to 22000uF, would it be due to electrical issues causing failure downstream to other components, or from a sound quality perspective. Would the 4000uF extra caps cause improvement or degradation in sound quality.

No..Actually If capacitance gets to large the inrush surge to initially charge them stresses the power rectifiers and power transformer. 22,000 are no real problem.There is only two, one for the positive rail and one for the negative rail.One caviat using snap-ins it may take some finessing to properly mount so the caps are side by side enough to use the original clamping bracket.Watch the polarity when installing the new caps -one caps " negative" terminal will go to the common ground but the other ones " positive" terminal will go to the common ground.
 
I've found that using these particular pins on these particular caps will get you the closest to the lug style mounting positions..But double and triple check your application before snipping off the unuseable leads. See photo.
