Use Marantz 1060 as preamp for 2226B

Hi all,

First post here :) so I got myself a 2226B today and I also have a 1060 integrated. I compared the two and find the 1060 to sound better than the 2226B.
Now I'm kind of new to all this so forgive me if this is a simple question but how can I use my 1060 as a preamp for my 2226B? And if I use my 1060 as a preamp does that mean that the 2226B functions purely as an audiosource (for fm, aux, phono) and do all the controls happen on the 1060? Which amp do I connect my speakers to?

You can try it either way and decide which amp/Pre-Amp combo you like better. The 1060 cap coupled amp or the 2226B DC amp. Or, if the 1060 is better all around you have the 2226B as a 2nd or backup unit.

If the 2226B has "pre-out", connect that to the 1060 "main-in" and hook your speakers up to the 1060 speaker terminals. Hook up your turntable, CD player, etc. to the 2226B.

You will then have full function of the 2226B plus the 30 watt per channel, cap-coupled power amplifier section of the 1060.
 
I think he asked about doing it the other way round. At least that's how I read it, and answered it (above).

No, as others have mentioned the 2226B will act solely as a "Power Amp"

Yes, the 1060 will act as "Pre Amp" and all the controls associated with it such as source (Aux, Tape, Phono), Bass, Treble etc

Not sure what your goal is exactly, but if you want to use your 2226B as a tuner (with the ability to plug in aux, phono, etc.) you would connect a TAPE OUT on the 2226B to an input on the 1060.

2226B has Pre-Out RCA jacks those are what should be used to connect to the 1060 Amp-In connections instead of Tape Out. Otherwise it’s amp is still active and receiving the pre-amp signal internally.

Yes, if the OP wants to use the 2226B as a preamp and the 1060 as a power amp. However, the title of the thread describes it the other way around and somehow wants to use the 2226b as a source for FM etc.

The OP also says they prefer the sound of the 1060, so bypassing its preamp section seems counterproductive.

The OP needs to clarify what their goals are.
 
Amazing how many (mostly redundant) replies there are. I'll delete mine; it answered his questions, but the waters are getting very muddied now.

He seems quite clear with his question, which is "how to use 1060 as preamp".

As for FM, he can indeed send it from the 2226B to the 1060 via tape out from the 2226B, connected to any available input of the 1060 (other than Phono).

The question is clear but I'm not convinced the OP knows what, exactly sounds "better" or why.

He wants to use the 1060 as a preamp but use the 2226B as an amplifer, FM Tuner, Phono Preamp, Line Preamp. This is somewhat convoluted.

Does the "tone board" sound better on the 1060? Maybe the "volume knob" is where all the magic is. :dunno:

I have toyed a bit with the preamp/poweramp setup, however, the 1060 by itself still sounds the best to my ear.
I think that my goal here is to get the sweet full sound of the 1060 but have the 2226B act as the source for everything; aux, phono and especially fm/am. Having the 1060 as a preamp helps but it's still not what I was aiming for (might just pick up a seperate 104/105 tuner in the future and couple it with that lol)
I think that I'm going to give @willyrover 's advice a shot tomorrow!
Btw, I was pretty underwhelmed with the sound of the 2226B, anybody else have had the same experience with these? Looks awesome nonetheless! ;)

If you prefer the sound of the 1060, why would you possibly want to use the 2226B in any capacity, other than perhaps as a tuner?

You are effectively saying, above, that you want to use the 2226B as a preamp (the control for all inputs). Why? The 1060 has a better preamp section.

If you just want to find a use for the 2226B, use it only as a tuner. You get the pretty faceplate without its pedestrian performance.
 
Sorry my DBT wasn’t lightning up on the Tape Out solution for FM. I got it. Not trying to be mean, but this thread just caused the band named Circle Jerks to pop pinto my head. My own warped sense of humor. Lol.

The 1060 preamp section and the phono stage does sound pretty good.
I like the midrange control also. He might like the direct coupled amp in 2226B over the cap coupled amp in the 1060. He won't tell a difference in volume really.
