Use of AI in troubleshooting

I confess I have been very skeptical on the AI topic, even though I am an IT guy.
Until I tried to use an AI LLM model to help me troubleshoot a Pioneer SX-1010 that had a couple symptoms: no relay click and DC on the ouput of the left amp board.
I fed the model with the schematics and several mesurements of the board transistors and asked for a step by step plan.
After just a couple tries, it narrowed down the possibilities and asked me: measure continuity between Q7's emitter and Q9's base.
And, bingo. The board track was damaged right there: a lifted pad.
Hats off to my new sounding board.

I acquired my knowledge the old fashioned way; through textbooks, years of schooling/study/classes and apprenticeships. Then 40+ years of continued learning through practical experience. My only use for computers is for socializing on technical forums (such as AK) and data storage. When I need a consult, I contact a fellow human.

I may be going off topic somewhat, for I have never used AI for troubleshooting. As for using it, whenever I do research on the web and get an AI answer, I always verify it through reputable websites.

Apparently, the AI search engines' answers are derived from a consensus of websites, which isn't always the right answer. I tested one search engine by asking, "Who was the first rock band to chart at number one in the US?" The AI answered "the Beatles", which is wrong. The correct answer is the Tornados who hit number one two years before with Telstar. Now, there was an option for feedback on the answer, allowing me to state the correction. Now, I don't know if a tech made the correction or if the AI read my feedback, but it now gives the correct answer.
 
The AI probably lifted the pad when you had your back turned. I've used AI for various things, and it can be a powerful tool, but you can't trust it as far as you can throw it. Ideally, be like a lawyer and only ask it questions you already know about what the answer should be. It is fairly good at organizing a plan.

ive fed it my system components and asked it to maximize its set up. it's actually told me im mostly there.
maybe relocating my subs, tube recommendations. gave ideas for upgrades. tubewise, i got some very good information on what to expect for sound. it's been pretty much on. though, i can't imagine a better tube than the kenrad 6sn7s, especially if you like bass but they're fab overall to me. but, erybody has their own taste.
 
Yup, I've used it for various troubleshooting tasks. From plumbing to fixing a Hubspot pic gallery for a client's website to understanding how the ipad compresses bluetooth vs wifi, I have found it incredibly handy for a ton of things.
 
This actually appeals to me. I'm not a fan of the current models, they're no better than throwing darts with most stuff.

But pure logic is where they should excel, and ideally analyzing schematics and troubleshooting should fit there. I must say I hadn't thought of this, and I've a few bench queens that have stymied me.
 
I used AI as a quick check on something and it was dead wrong. Asked if the amp boards on a JVC 4VR-5456 were swappable left/right and AI said yes (to see if problem moved sides). In the end they are definitely not interchangeable - even after redoing bias/offset aftervswap it would throw 21VDC to speaker terms in 4ch mode. Schematic makes it look like boards are the same but they are only mirrored and there is a missing ground on the socket that the SM shows to exist when swapped.
AI apologized for the potentially catastrophic results of blowing up equipment. Don't trust AI as much.

Not too long ago, I just wanted to know some specs of a transistor I already knew was an NPN. AI told me it was a PNP.

i thought about trying it as a lot of times its not easy to get human inputs on problems, maybe it will work if enough information and specs is given to it.im not school trained nor do i have years of experience
 
Use all the available information you can get and form your own opinion of the correct course that you want to follow.

Using ChatGPT, Google, YouTube, or whatever you have available to solve a problem is reasonable. Just don't rely on a single source (including content posted on this site).

i agree, i usually do some research to try and get an idea what the problem is and how to fix it. youtube has been a good source of info, my GF is a retired IT so i pick her brain too although she hasnt worked on stereos,just helping me. we get it done after a fashion

The difference is, here people will chastise and challenge you for better input. OTOH, AI may just turn its confidence level up to 11 and tell you the sky is green and a light bulb can be used as a transistor, both of which are true under limited circumstances.

Yeah. Be leery of all the talking heads. Digital or analog.

i am getting ready to do a total rebuild on a kr 3200, its got fried resisters and such a friend of mine builds gutiar amps from scratch and is going to give me a hand. hes got all the equipment so i feel pretty confident we can do it. i asked AI about the probable cause of the stuff frying and it didnt sound to good of info
