Using a BluRay player for playing CDs? Any experiences?

My Pioneer BDP-09FD BluRay player plays conventional audio CDs as good or better than anything on the market. No external DAC needed. It's limitation is it doesn't play SACD or DVD audio but since I don't have any SACDs or DVD audio DVDs that really doesn't bother me.

Saw a Toshiba SD-3950 at the thrift. Grabbed it to see what all the hype was.
There’s a bunch of posts in the early 2000’s about how good it sounds.
It does sound really good. Way better that the single bit DAC machines that were around in the years before.
Doesn’t look as good as my 1980’s machines, and you can’t see the tracks on the front panel; needs to be hooked to a tv.

I had the FiiO Taishan D03 laying around. It's a budget 24/192 mini DAC w/ coaxial and optical input. I bought it years back to hook a TV with only digital out to a conventional stereo. I gave it a whirl with the optical output of the Pannie BDP. It has made an improvement with a smoother better balanced sound w/o the harshness of the highs. Highly recommended.

BTW, here's a photo of this little budget system I've been talking about.

My personal opinion is that a Blueray player is a necessity in my system. I started exploring Blueray Audio discs with their remasterings in Atmos and DTS 5.1. I really like the format. These releases offer music that sounds better than I have ever heard it. Being able to play CDs is just frosting on the cake.
