i have an onkyo tx 8511 and pioneer sx 780, in another thread that i cant seem to get a reply i was told to try running the 780 as a preamp and the onkyo as a power amp. how would i do this? with the tape loop like hooking an eq up or is it more complicated? thanks.. sorry for the double thread..

If the SX-780 has "PRE-OUT" and "MAIN-IN" jacks, remove the jumpers and use RCA interconnects from the "PRE-OUT" on the SX-780, to the AUX on the Onkyo receiver.

I guess that answers that! You can still use the 780's TAPE OUT to the 8511's AUX input if the 780 has a better tuner or phono stage otherwise just use 'em seperately with a pair of speakers for each.

I would use the 8511 as the main control and system.

Why are you wanting to hook up two receivers up, one of which has no capability asa pre-amp(SX-780)? The Onkyo is rated for 100WPC.

The only thing I can think of is the ONKYO's Tuner is KAPUT and you want to use the 780 as a tuner. In that case run the tape loop, OUT from the pioneer, to either the TAPE LOOP IN or the Aux jack on the Onkyo. They are all line level inputs/outputs and should pretty well match impedances. Run all external sources thru the 780.

NOTE that running this way you WILL NOT have control over the VOLUME, TONE CONTROLS, BALANCE, Loudness, or the LOW FILTER on the 780. You'd still have to work the Onkyo's controls.

DAMN! Got beat to the punch. That's what I get for thinking about what I want to put down and editing it while I'm typing.

Hee hee, my sentiments exactly while I'm googling the receivers in question to see what input & output cababilities each one has! :D
