Using dq10's as satellites with miller@kreisel v-75.

I have dahlquist dq10's powered by a phase linear 400. Will hooking them up as satellites on my miller@kreisel v-75 sub with an 80hertz high pass filter significantly lowerer their power demands.?As they are now running directly off of the phase linear and seem to use all of its power before they can reach their full potential.
Any help apreciated.

I would say yes to your question. Since you already have the gear why not try it and decide for yourself?

DQ-10's were designed to sound good, not play really loud. If you're looking for absolute volume perhaps some other speakers (CV or Klipsch) would be a better choice.
 
DQ10's are not known for a huge bottom end so that combo seems fitting if that is where you think things are generally lacking. Otherwise I cant see how a PL400 couldn't get the most out of DQ10's.
 
I'm using DQ-20's and a M&K V2B subwoofer with my Sansui G-8700DB and am very happy with the sound, I was using a Velodyne HGS-18 but think the M&K sounds better.

There is the truth. TAS reviews back in the day mentioned a 95dB listening level as good with limited reasons to go much higher. They continued saying they get a bit harsh at higher volume levels and were designed to be played up to 100dB. The recommend Loud speakers, you know the brands, if you want to listen much louder than that.
 
They can play loud, but not insanely loud) with a Phase 400. I would go with two amps (keep the PL on the DQ10's) and an electronic crossover set to 50 Hz.
 
Using an 80Hz passive filter like that will reduce the bass demands placed on the speaker and will somewhat reduce the power demands placed on the amp below 80Hz.

However, because the amp is still reproducing the full range signal, the reduced power demand on the amp doesn't really translate into materially more usable power/more "headroom". In order to achieve that you'd need to use high pass filter on the low level signal going into the amp, as audiomagnate eludes to.
 
Thinking a bit more, if one is truly exhausting the PL400 driving the DQ-10s will a 75W sub be enough to keep up? For normal listening I'd think so, but seems like it might be a bit light for the cranky times.
 
So i hook my pre amp to the active crossover run the crossover to the pl 400 and run the sub off the rca on the pre as usual and this will increase my headroom?

It would probably be fine. As mentioned, DQ-10s really don't sound good when pushed hard. The sub will likely run out of snoot before the PL-400, but by then, the DQs are gonna be begging for mercy.
I think we mentioned once before to the OP (in another thread) that the DQs flat out will never play loud like his Klipsch Forte.

It ain't gonna work miracles but it would be better/more efficient than doing it at speaker level.

You have everything you need to try it with the sub using the built-in speaker level high pass filter. I strongly suggest trying that before further thought of spending a dime on more stuff. You may find what you have accomplishes what you want, and spending more for the crossover won't, necessarily.

To points already made, the DQ-10s regardless of what you do with the signal, will not perform similarly to (apparently) the Klipsch you have.

Yes. Last time I had DQs, I set the active high-pass around 60-70 Hz. The sub should have its own crossover, so set it at whatever sounds good to to you. Same with the high pass. Start at 60 or 70 and adjust for preferred sound.
 
My new plan is to run this on a seperate system for my dad. So they wont have to try and play with the klipsch. I still want to use all of this systems potential.
 
He in the past was telling me about some of the best speakers he had heard and described some large square speakers he was calling bozaks. After coming to my house one day he saw the dq10's and realized that they were the speakers from his memories. Can any of you reccomend an active crossover under 200$ that woud perform this?
 
I would buy a quality used, US-made, stereo PA type crossover. DOD, BiAmp, BGW, Ashly, etc. all made pretty good ones. Just know if you go that route, you will have to make adaptor cords, as few of those used RCA inputs/outputs.
 
There is no need to buy or fabricate new cables. XLR to RCA adaptors are widely an inexpensively available.

Note: XLR female connections are exclusively for inputs. XLR male connectors are exclusively for outputs. This applies to cables and devices.

If you observe the back of any XLR equipped device you'll notice the outputs are male and the inputs are female. All XLR cables have a male and a female end. XLR cables are truly directional.

FWIW: My gear has a mix of RCA and XLR connectors. Adaptors work just fine for me.

With cables there is flexibility to wire them according to various needs. The adapters, while fine in many cases, do not allow flexibility if you need to work with pin 1/pin 3 or shielding issues.

Cables are easy to make if one has provisions for soldering.
 
Far as a crossover, miniDSP is about 1/2 the stated budget and there are versions with RCA input/output. It is DSP though but part of that is capability for advanced functions not available in the typical analog 2-way crossover.
