Using DVD Player as a CD Player

I bought one of the same Yammies. After listening, I'd say if you're not going to jump to an Oppo, the Yammie is the way to go. Has front panel controls, a great DAC and is a Universal player.

My parents just gave me their old Magnavox DVD recorder. Since it's silver, it goes well with my Pioneer equipment. I yanked out my gigantic Technics 110 CD player (I was only using the single disc slot) and replaced it with the Magnavox. IMO, the sound is much clearer and dynamic. Sure, it takes a while for the CD to load and there's no display on the unit at all, only 3 lights, but it's pretty useful. I can watch DVDs and record too. I might try recording audio to DVDs.

My experience is quite the opposite: never found a DVD player that sounds close in quality to the CDPs that I've kept: two are vintage (Philips CD-350 and Denon DCD-1650G -intended for the japanese internal market), one semi-vintage (Cambridge Audio CD 4 SE) and one recent (Cambridge Audio 640 C v2). Of the several DVD players I used, I finally kept a Pioneer DV-343. I always felt that the Cambridge Audio DVDPs would be in another league, but never tried one of them. The Denon (no modifications so far) and the Cambridge Audio 640 yield comparable sound quality.

It's true that even cheap DVD players make decent CD players. I used to use a $70 Philips DVD player that sounded better than one might expect. However, the better CD players I've heard, even a mid-90s Rega Planet, blow any DVD player I've head out of the water - and that includes my current Oppo 981, which is still a great bargain.
 
I have a Pioneer DV-47A that sounds excellent playing cd's. Not to mention it plays SACD, DVD-A and other formats as well. It has cd digital direct feature that bypasses circuits that the audio would otherwise pass through.
 
I use a Marantz DV9600 Universal DVD player as my digital source in my bedroom setup. As others have stated, most DVD players for the most part are backwards compatible with the CD format. The Marantz is compatible with DVD-V, DVD-A, SACD-Multi, SACD-Stereo, DVD-R/RW, SVCD, VCD, CD, CD-R/RW, MP3, and JPEG formats.

My EAD CD2000 (an expensive, and heavy unit), replaced with HK DVD22
Meridian CD206 (another expensive unit) replaced with a cheap DVD player.

Now, we tried some new DVD players and it is true some sound terribly bad. But some are very good. There is no relation to price.

The reason why some new players sound better than TOTL High End old CDP is because of more than just the DACs. Technology in the computer world is always moving rapidly, better everything for less money, better DAC, better filters, better error correction, better laser tracking,... Digital playback is part of computer technology, the question is, would you prefer to use a computer from over 10 years ago with windows 3.1 or a new one with the latest (and cheaper) technology?
 
I've been looking at the Samsung Blu-Ray player that streams NetFlix and Pandora, even has built-in wifi, for $150 on sale. Pretty intriguing, may be time to move the old DVD player to the hi-fi...
 
Sony DVD/CD Player

It works for me in my HT system. I don't play CDs that often on that system, but when I do it seems to work well.

As mentioned before, you have to use the remote to access most fuctions, but that mode of operation is consistent with listening to CDs in that room.

Yeah, I've been doing some research after posting. Looks like the 2009 version may have fixed some of the issue. Also, noted that the $150 is only wifi "ready", doesn't include the actual wifi adapter. :sigh:

You have, as you well know, a fantastic CD and SACD player that also plays DVD at near Blue Ray quality.

Myself I have the DV-58av a more recent DVD player, that also has a "Pure Audio" button that turns off all video, digital outs and displays for better sound. This player will be with me for a long time to come.
The ELITE line of DVD players are very well built, and no matter if you have an older model or the very latest, they all have a superb DAC .
 
the wife just got a Toshiba DR-410 DVD recorder/player. You can play with audio output settings and bypass all dynamic range control features, before feeding signal into the DAC. Sounds, so far, very nice!:music:
