Using pre out & main in

I have a Marantz 2226B & a STRG1000 Sony. I want to use the Marantz as a tuner pre amp & use the Sony's power amp. How do I connect the two devices? I ran a cable from the pre out on the Marantz to the front speaker analog connection on the Sony. Hooked up the front speaker connections on the Sony. Turned on both devices & got no sound. Should I be using the Main in on the the Marantz & not the pre out?

does your sony have main in?
marantz pre out to sony main in

there are other ways, but then you are going to have 2 pre amps involved and thats not desirable

No main-in on the Sony that I can see. Try Marantz pre-out to Sony CD in. Then select CD on the Sony. If the Sony has a "direct" mode for playback, bypassing the tone controls, that may work for you.

If there's no direct play back via the CD input & no main in then bypassing the preamp in the Sony is probably not doable? How do you know if your bypassing the Sony preamp? Just fiddling with the Sony bass & treble to see if it affects the sound? Will I risk damaging anything by all my nonsense? Just curious if the power amp in the Sony is being limited by the home theater preamp. The eq settings on the Sony dont add bass & treble when they're adjusted up like the old Marantz. The Sony is heavy & seems to play clear at loud volumes but any tone adjustment are minimal. Is that the nature of home theater receivers?

If the Sony has no main in, there is no way to use its amp without using its preamp too. Two preamps in the chain is not good for clarity.

I used to use an Akai 100wpc integrated with my Marantz 2240 to power extra speakers,pre-out to I think either CD or tape in,didn't have a main in.

If not equipped with main inputs, feeding the Sony's power amp from an external source was never intended. Forego that notion and get/use something else like an actual power amp.

You usually need to close the loop. I use a Y adapter or it's equivalent to drive my external amp off a quad receiver. That lets me use both that amp and the internal amps to drive speakers.

I also built an internal Y into my custom tube amp. The two sets of RCAs are just bridged internally.

If all else fails, you could maybe daisy chain tape loops on both receivers. Tape out to the Sony's tape in, Sony tape out back to the Marantz ... turn all your gains down first, and you'll probably have to play with the tone sections some to get them to work well together.
