Hi,

I'm lucking out lately with speakers! Today i found a pair of Utah HS4-B's and I have a few questions.

First off I was wondering if there was a way to tame the bass a bit. It's far from over powering but it's a bit more boomy then i'm used to. would adding polyfill to the cabinet tame it a bit?

secondly seeing as these speakers are a few years old (to be kind) I am planning on recapping them. I've never done that before so If someone could tell me what to order from parts express I'd appreciate it. Down below you'll find pics of the caps that are on the crossover now.

thanks!

that's our cat Bert in the first pic there. figured it was about time he made an appearance on the board.

As long as you're not "stuffing" (having to force material in, as in squishing it together) the cabinet, some fiberglass insulation in addition to (or instead of some of) the polyfill might help a bit.

Also, lengthening the port vent on the inside of the cabinet can do wonders. Maybe try adding an inch of length as a start... as long as it's not coming within 3" of the inside back of the cabinet after you're done. If it's too close afterward, you can always install a pipe elbow from a hardware store... cut off the pipe, so that you wind up with a total vent length (measured down the center-line of the pipe, from one end, through the bend, out the other end) that's 1" longer than stock.

Regards,
Gordon.

thanks for the help so far guys. if anyone knows for sure what that second white cap is please let me know :)

thanks again for the help identifying the caps. just ordered them from parts express so hopefully they'll be here by mid next week.

How About.....

Yeah, I'm way late, but How about this.......

4 microfarad 50 volt Non Polarized = 4---50VNP

Hope you got the right stuff anyway.........willhowl:thmbsp:

For a way simple fix try getting them off the floor. That should tame the bass by quite a bit, depending on how high you raise them. Getting the highs at ear level can't hurt either!

Cool speakers! I'm ready to start finding crazy good deals like that any time now...

busy morning so far. I was listening to some new speakers when i heard the doorbell! my caps had arrived.

i just finished up replacing the old ones. i did what everyone seems to recommend doing. i tackled one at a time so i could do a little before and after for myself. the improvement is very noticeable. the mids and highs are much more present (if that makes sense).

do new caps require any break in? if they do i'l just switch over to the radio and let them play on a low volume for the day.

thanks again to everyone who helped identify the old caps.
