VAC Preamp

Today, I was fortunate to come across an older (2003) preamp from VAC (Valve Amplification Company).
I first became aware of the company from their grandiose ballroom booth at Axpona in which they were jointly featured with Acora acoustics speakers. Of the overwhelming expanse of products featured at the expo, none made such an impression as did this system. I quickly found out that these very impressive amplifiers were in a class and price point that was far exceeding any rational thought of an audio budget I've had.
However, I found that older models in luxury hifi can sometimes be had for very reasonable, or even bargain prices as they are nudged from the foreground in lieu of the more recent, and ultimately more desirable pieces.
I found a semi-local listing for this VAC preamp at a price roughly 2% of comparable current offerings of the company. It was only a slight detour of my pre-planned errands so I thought it worthy of investigation. I met the gentleman and we made the deal.
After getting it home and integrating it into my system, with proper warm up and equipping with my very best tubes, I was amazed. For my tastes, this is one the most wonderful preamps I have ever heard and certainly the best I have heard in my home. The stereo image is excellent and the tone is sweeter than honey. The depth and width of the soundstage and imaging is nearly frightening. There is so much dimension and detail yet not an ounce of fatigue. Somehow this preamp extracts all the nuance yet delivers it in the most natural presentation. Nothing seems overly magnified yet it still to be found for the listener. I found myself discovering beauty and humanity in the music that was not available to me previously in this system. VAC makes truly remarkable equipment.
Have you owned or heard VAC amps?

Apogee One (Audio Interface/DAC)
VAC Vintage Line Amplifier (preamp)
Audio Research D70 (amp)
Falcon Acoustics LS3/5A mini monitors (speakers)

VAC makes amazing products, and I believe will still service any of their products.
I’ve been lucky enough to meet the company’s owner and hear several of their products.
You did very good. Enjoy!!!

That's a top tier preamp. Buy once and kept it. A couple of years ago I nearly purchased a VAC preamp but ultimately went with another ARC (I've owned several). I have experience VAC at audio shows. Excellent products with great support.

Contact VAC, they may have an update available for your preamp. Yes, they still support their older products.

Thanks for chiming in, gentlemen. It's great to hear that the company is still servicing these older pieces. This one is in good, working order with a fresh set of filter caps that are ready to go another 20 years.
However, it is an older revision of the same model. This is the MK2 and they did, indeed produce a MK3. That may be something to consider in the future.
These amps have made such an impression on me that I am considering selling the majority of my gear, even my beloved ARC amp, to get one of their integrated amps.

I found this preamp in Davenport, which I was told was the birthplace of VAC and the former home of the founder. Does that track with your encounter?

I heard everything in Georgia. Met the owner at a very high end audio store in Atlanta.

depending on what the budget is you may want to try something like the GR Research B24. To beat the GR cord you will need to get into the 3K power cable price point.
I have several VAC amps.

Congrats, and welcome

I am still running a VAC CLA 1 MKII dual mono tubed pre w/20lb external power supply in my second system. Kevin from VAC will still refresh and repair this to the next level if I want to spend the money.

Forgive me but I couldn't really justify a $450 AC cord just for my preamp. Maybe something more in the $100-$200 range?
