Value of Technics SL-1200/1210 turntables

With the release of the very expensive GAE and GR range in 2016 and 2017, do you think old SL-1200/1210 series in mint condition will hold their value? Or will they even rise in value? Or will they be worthless within 10 years? I'm talking about good mint condition classic MK2/MK5 Technics SL-1200/1210 here..

The desirable models will hold their value.

They were down in price about 10 years ago (while still being manufactured in later revisions) and I was able to get one in mint condition in it's original packing for $300, which I considered a good deal comparing with other offerings.

They are up now in price.

They are not a recent model. They are 30 years old and older, and prices still hold or going up since the design and looks were re-introduced.

My bet is that they will still be relevant 20 years from now. Provided at least one or two companies still produce cartridges.

With the price of the newest series SL-1200GR at $1600 that might be a stretch for some people but the prior series SL-1200Mk2-5 averaging $500-600 for examples in very good condition is much more doable. Along with the Technics and any other brand competent desirable vintage tables I predict prices will continue to at least hold if not slowly increase. I was advised that a local audio shop cant keep good vintage tables on the shelf, they go out the door as fast as they get them, new tables are a tough sell maybe one a week.

It certainly seems logical that the newer models would bolster demand and price stability for the geriatric models. Sellers of older machines will point to the $1500+ pricing for the updated models and insist that their machines are worth a mint. They'll have a good point. The Sl1200 is a great machine.

Agree Frank I have an SP-25 and along with the money I spent on the upgrades I could of bought a SP-10Mk2. $1600 for the GR is a bargain.
